I've gotta say, Bakemonogatari and the entire "Monogatari" series really put me off at first. I hadn't been regularly watching anime at that point when I first decided to give it a go and it was so hard to get through the first few episodes of it. So I put it to the side for a while, not because i thought it was bad, I just had a hard time following anything that was happening. I wasn't used to the text flashing up on the screen for seconds at a time, or what the purpose of any of the title cards were.

After discovering about the source material for the series, and how the anime was adapted from a novel, it made a lot more sense. The anime does a fantastic job of living up to it's origin, and for that matter it's title. It's hard to pick a more "storybook" anime than the 'Monogatari' series because it's presented in such a storybook manner. After giving the series another go, I immediately binged every season of it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's certainly not for everyone, Shaft has their own way of doing things that is lost on a few people, and i can't blame people for not liking the show. But for me, I have found a deep appreciation for it. It's still quite different to anything that I've ever seen, and I believe that it will always have that as a staying power. I'm just glad that I went back and gave it a second chance

Gave up watching Hirugashi after the first three episodes since nothing is explained. It wasn't until a few years later I decided to return to it, and I'm so glad that I did. Till this day, Hirugashi is my all time favorite anime, partly because it completely annihilated my initial expectations.

Higurashi is a trip and a half. Tbh i had only ever heard small references to it when i first watched it, and the only reason I did is because a video store near my house was going out of business and they happened to have season 1 and 2 on sale for quite a bargain. After watching the first few episodes i was so entirely confused that I almost didn't bother with the rest of the show, but boy oh boy am I glad I did. One of the most surprising shows i've watched, and I ended up watching both seasons again since then and it's earned a careful spot up in my favorites collection

Can't say that there are any series I've seen that would fit those criteria. The series I drop, I don't pick up, usually because they're a combination of being uninteresting and cliched. If I don't like a series, but it's popular, I'll finish it, but it usually ends up confirming why I don't like it rather than changing my mind. The series which I've given a second chance, or just taken my time finishing, at best, are just alright, such as Assassination Classroom. The constant lectures would just continually reaffirm that I was not its target audience.

Steins;Gate and Bakemonogatari.

Seriously S;G's first episode is horrid. When you come back to it later on its all brilliant.

One Piece, the first episodes were boring and I was prideful, so I was ashamed of watching something I thought looked ridiculous.

In the end, I re-tried watching it 3 times, and when I finally got past the first 5 episode, it essentially became my favorite anime.
Ironically, Usopp (long nose) who I hated when I was a prideful kid became my fav character as an adult xD
(Praise God Usopp)

As a few others have already mentioned... Monogatari. It's just one of those shows that is very hard for a casual anime viewer to get into due to it's rather eccentric presentation. Personally, I find Bakemonogatari the hardest to get into which is a shame since it's what the majority of people new to the series will watch first.

Once you absorb Bakemonogatari, the rest is easily digestible.
