I'm not saying it's not important, I actually quite like getting more options.

I just find it odd that I open some and get nothing, or rather if it has maybe some sort of significance in the longer run. But if it's just for fashion then I'm totally okay with that.

Well I have two theories about it, one they sometimes hand out a unique item or outfit you already have and thus you get nothing. Or some sort of unseen probability algorithm is determining if a chest will hand out something. I can't say with any certainty though.

I would imagine there might be an achievement or something for opening them all, or at least collecting everything you can get from them.

From what I can tell, they are only cosmetic items and some of them are available from other sources. Unless they're somehow different from the mini game vendor options, I've received a few of the Normin outfits from the Katz chests.

I can't recall how it was at first, but for as many as I can remember it's been a completely consistent pattern of Item, Nothing, Item, Nothing, Item, etc. from the Katz chests. In other words, I'm only getting an item from every second one I open. I have absolutely no idea why they chose to do it this way, or why they didn't at least give you something minor from the non cosmetic ones, but that's how it's been for me.

Honestly, I think it's pretty dumb and I've only picked up a handful of cosmetic items I actually like. There definitely aren't enough costume options in game so I guess it's good I like the defaults for most of the characters. Of course, one only has to look at the already released (and pretty expensive) costume DLC and how cool some of it is to see where their effort ended up on this front.

Also as a side note fuck the equipment section. Tales games have always been bad in terms of having to learn the important stuff from your gear but Berseria is one of the worse. I am picking up new gear every damn thirty seconds and as a result the am having to grind forever to learn the basic stuff then equipping the slightly newer stuff, rinse and repeat for hours. Then I once I think I am done for awhile I get a literal mountain of new gear and back into the grind to learn all the new stuff. This shit is really holding up story progression ya know.

I pretty quickly settled into picking the one or two base stats that fit for each character and stuck to those. Then, once I got a piece I liked the base stats for (say +attack and +defense for Velvet) I'd try to find one of that type that had the bonus buffs I preferred. This means I actually skip over a large portion of the weapons/armour the game gives me pretty much instantly. I haven't spent any time really grinding out anything as the vast majority of the gear I get ends up as spare parts the next time I hit a store. The gear upgrade arc for me has actually been pretty much on pace with my progression through the game.

I suppose really it's my own damn fault. Too many years of lone wolf in MMOs just makes me want to see all those pretty skills and numbers on the character stat pages ya know. Though if previous Tales games are any indicator all that grinding will come in handy when it comes to the end game challenges.

Or I could ended figuring out I wasted my time but Tales Games haven't done that to me yet.

The Tales series started way way back when on, I think, the Super Nintendo so it's a very long running series. It's a lot like Final Fantasy though in that despite having a lot of titles in the series, very few of them are directly connected character or storyline wise. As such, you can just pick up pretty much whichever one looks good to you and be okay. Tales of Berseria is connected to Tales of Zesteria as they both take place in the same world but you're not missing much of the experience if you only play one or the other as some cameos and storyline concepts seem to be all they really share.

Combat in the Tales games is completely real time and the newer games (like Berseria) play like a fast and frantic combo heavy brawler as opposed to a standard RPG. You move around in a enclosed combat "arena" freely and control one character to move, attack, defend, dodge, etc. while your other party members are controlled by AI you can tweak with a handful of different strategy options. You can also switch control to other characters in your party if you get tired of playing as a certain character or if you want/need to use a certain character to do a certain thing.

Here's where it all began- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3SA9LuqQgA
*sniff* Pardon me while I get all teary-eyed and nostalgic.
Anyway, if you're thinking of getting into the series, you might as well start with Berseria- I haven't played it yet but I've hear good things.

I'd say just pick up Symphonia (Chronicles) and be introduced to the series as many in the West were, lol.

I was introduced through Tales of the Abyss. Then Legendia, Symphonia, Vesperia, Graces, Xillia 1 and 2, Zesteria, and now Berseria. I have been addicted to this series for a while.

I love Magilou and the game wouldn't be the same without her, but for me it's VelvetxEleanor all the way.

And yeah, I'm still not finished either. I've been up to a couple of points where it seemed like the ending was right around the corner but nope. Maybe tomorrow? I'm not sure but I'm totally sucked into the story and characters such that I don't want it to end but at the same time I can't wait to see how it all turns out.

I honestly haven't made any progress, and I'm still in Loegres lol. I think rushing through Zestiria burnt me out.

Finally beaten the game. Level 102.
I did do most of the side-quests, just that I'm missing about 3-4 different "Code Red" monsters that need to be taken out. I don't think I'm going to end up getting platinum for this game, at least not any time soon (unfortunately). I've already put in about 130 hours, give or take, and not sure if I'm going to go for a New Game+ run right now.

Finished myself as well. Level 67 and about 75 hours on the game clock (though I did spend a bunch of time actually listening to and watching the Conversation scenes). Missed a handful of sidequests but I completed all of the major ones. Honestly not sure if I'm going to be going back for another play through or end game/post game content, and I definitely won't be trying to platinum the game (not that that's something I regularly do anyway). I'm definitely satisfied with the experience I had as is.

Okay why did you two even bother playing a Tales game? Tales games are all about the New Game+ and end game content. That's where the challenge is and the fun. If you're attention spans are that short why not play one of those worthless mil-sim shooters? I for one am at level 150 and still going strong.
