You gave the very justification for these actions in your own post. CNN is mainstream media, they need to market themselves and their stories to normies, average joes and a big part of that is using images said audience can immediately identify with the topic. You want to know what actual hacling looks like?

That's real hacking. It's dull, untantilizing and does not in any way have the alluring eye catch that would attract an average voewer in CNNs denographic. To them this doesn't look any different than just about any other computer function other than maybe web browsing, especially not at first glance, which is a crucial moment for enticing the reader. When normal people think of hacking they think of stuff shown in media like the matrix, sword art online or even fallout 4. Thus the decision to go with that kind of style only makes sense.

If your wondering what he did he just looked at his ethernet connection, stopped the ethernet device, changed the MAC address, then started it back up.

Here is a better image of "hacking" it is a network scanner used to find all devices within a certain network and give you their IP address and MAC. It would actually be in their set of tools.

The point remains that it will not resonate nearly as well with the demographic of people who watch 24 hour news cycles. It would be stupid for them not to use the more stylistically identifiable image.

I'm seeing people on even facebook making fun of them. It didn't do well it made them into a laughing stock. With all of their resources they can't download a free program and then take a picture of it running.... Nope they take a screenshot from fallout.

Good for you, laughing at people for doing something completely normal. Makes you look really smart.

Prerequisite viewing material should be War Games. So the potential Russian Hacker candidate knows the possibility of this new endeavor.

The purpose is to vindicate Russians from the shameless, racist propaganda campaign launched against them.

I remember for the longest time one of the CNN anchors was using a Minecraft Creeper mug, so I suppose it's not unprecedented for video game references to slip "subtly" into the media.

At least they weren't using the stock photo of "code" from the Matrix movies. I got so tired of seeing that plastered all over every article even remotely related to computers or technology.

Are Russians over hated in some regards? Yes. Do I want peace between Russians and the USA? I would prefer world peace. So yes.

Is Russia pure as driven snow? No way in hell. Stereotypes exist for a reason. Russia has done their fair share of fucked up stuff. Take... various illegal money opportunities that occur in Russia all the time. That or their genocide... Their invasions, laws, etc.

All in all... I am tired of people acting like Russia is the country sent down from the heavens to bring world peace. Russia has their own bloody flaws too. At least admit when Russia has fucked up -.-

Also I have worries if Russia will play us like a fiddle for the peace talks. One leader has a large amount of political savviness... the other doesn't need briefings because he knows all this already. Will need to see where the peace talks of 2017-2020 bring.

Trust in the mainstream media is technically at an all time low but its specifically because of Republicans. Who, strangely enough, suffered a huge swing in media distrust over 2015 when their leadership bombarded them with shit about everyone and everything lying to them while rigging the election against them.

A good chunk of the GOP's voter base has already been primed for years against the "liberal media" so following that to its extreme over the election cycle make these numbers unsurprising. Conversely, trust among everyone else probably eroded due to the ratings chasing over anything of actual substance over the course of the election.

Still, the GOP rank and file is not CNN's target audience. Nor is anyone under the age of 60. So media trust among Republicans isn't that much of a concern to them. Providing scary stock videos and images that match what an 86 year old envisions hacking to look like on the other hand. >.>

Ai, I have seen video game references all over the news... anime ones too! I remember one of my small town anchors making a death flag reference once. "I will be back soon... Don't worry, I just need to feed my dog!" "Wait... I just set my own death flag!" I wish I had it recorded... but damn the luck it isn't even on youtube or google!

Some people love games, and adding little "easter eggs" in makes the news a bit more fun for some people.

Also, as someone above me said... Using the fallout image sells. Appearances sell after all. Gotta make it look sleek and l33t and make the big money. Using a normal hacking screen is droll and would attract so many less views. Look at the music industry. They use click bait images... *nightcore images on youtube kek*

Click bait exists for a reason.

If that is it's purpose it fails miserably. Poking fun at CNN's choice of image for the article and claiming, as BGR does, that CNN is saying hacking works in real life like it does in Fallout is extremely silly and disingenuous but does nothing to refute claims by U.S intelligence agencies and the FBI that say Russia is responsible. It's just more histrionics.

There is nothing sleek or l33t about CNN. Its average viewer age is 61. And CNN is the cable news network with the YOUNGEST viewers at 61. While Fox has the oldest.

Just let that sink in for a moment then most of the stupidity of cable news will start to make sense. >.>

To be a Russian hacker, you need a Russian nationality tho.

What if I ethnically identify as a Russian?

That's not how it works.

How dare you oppress me you Ethnophobe! I identify as a Russian and if you disagree you are a bigot!

This is why I quit steam and pc gaming and I now own 5 consoles and a 72inch tv. The forums are all taken over by Russian's and I heard if you pissed them off in multiplayer matches they will hack your account and steal your stuff. There have been a number of complaints on this in the steam forums no matter what game you view the forum there is always that Russian writing.

Most people get hacked because they use a pathetically bad password. It's hardly even hacking at this points its literally statistical bingo: https://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/top-500-worst-passwords-all-time

Day's laughter in 6 pictures. I love how media gets picked up on forums on choosing wrong images.

Now, let's just wait for the day when the word 'hacker' would no longer be connected to the wrong context. I know media likes the word because it sounds so cool... But no.
