Hey guys.

Now that 2016 is over and we are transferring to a new season, everyone has been looking back at the shows that were released over this past year. While many great shows came out this week, some did not receive the attention that they deserved. This forum is to talk about some of the more hidden gems of 2016 and explain why we have enjoyed them.

I guess I'll go with Drifters, one of the few I watched this year tbh. I saw very little discussion about it.

Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans
March comes in like a lion
91 Days
Flip Flappers

Those are the ones that I enjoyed the most that not many people saw. March comes in like a lion deserved all the attention and hype that Yuri on Ice got.

Given that they released an OVA in September, I'll go with Non Non Biyori.

I absolutely agree. I loved that show and I felt like nobody else saw it. The action was awesome, the idea was unique and the characters were interesting. I loved the op for the show too. That was one of the reasons I made this forum.

Sorting by score on MAL and going by those below average.

Winter:

BBK/BRNK or Bubuki Buranki (CR): 6.47 rating, 17k completed.

Tough crowd due to full CG, but it's easily one of the most competitive of those by TV anime standards, and it reflects well on Studio Sanzigen (who were also behind 2013's Arpeggio: Ars Nova). They haven't been standing still since then and are presently front-runners in developing anime-style CG beside Polygon Pictures (Knights of Sidonia, Ajin). Here they've developed an engaging world with several quite rich characters, and I'm interested to follow it up with S2.

I wasn't bothered by the CG after giving it an episode or two to adapt, and Sanzigen has put real effort into making the characters expressive. First episode probably has the weakest models though--not ideal for catching an audience.

Koukaku no Pandora (Funi): 6.66 rating, 9.9k completed.

Comedy without much variation and the plot is mostly for show, but Clarion easily made the super-escapades of a young full-cyborg and her robot companion questing for world peace crazy-charming enough to keep the cour bright and fun.

Also Ears. ^-^

Dagashi Kashi (Funi): 6.73 rating, 67k completed.

Bit of an anomaly looking at how many actually watched it, but I enjoyed Dagashi Kashi. It was a super relaxing simulcast to follow, to the point where I started watching it unsubbed to avoid getting bogged down by dialogue. The minutiae of Japanese candy was a lot less important than just letting the characters act, and letting Saya just be constantly ridiculously adorable. The comedy gave an opportunity to loosen up and unwind more than outright /lol.

Got stuff to do, might come back to the other seasons later.

I didn't watch much from winter and spring, so I don't really know about underrated shows from then besides Showa Genroku.
For summer I would definitely say Amanchu and maybe Art Club.
For fall, it's gotta be Poco's Udon World and maybe some of the shorts.

Gonna agree with BBK/BRNK. It was good but hardly anyone watched it. Discussion threads eventually went silent for weeks with only Stark bumping them occasionally, although I tried to add my thoughts too sometimes. I think the CGI was a big factor in turning people away. An unknown mecha anime with nothing but CGI was just asking for this to happen unfortunately. The constant tone shifts in the first season probably didn't help either. I know I was a little disappointed when these comic relief characters (not that I have anything against Epizo) showed up immediately after Shizuru's badass fight and the battle against that headless Buranki. The season still ended on a high note though and the second season did a good job at maintaining its balance between comedy and serious moments. They actually got me to feel sorry for a certain Russian jerk. Overall it was a fun a show that too many people overlooked.
