Would be nice to see protagonists that wield fishing rods. I'm looking at you Togashi.

I would also like to see more protagonists use guns; particularly sniper rifles.

Hunter x Hunter...

But seriously I'd want to see a scythe over anything else, or at least see more side characters using them because I love the idea of them.

Spears. Those things are so useful. They can easily generate enough velocity to pierce most armour, they have the longest reach of any non-polearm melee weapon, they're light and fast and can even be used as a projectile.

If you need more proof of how much better spears are then swords, consider this:

The most famous sword user in anime is Kirito.

The most famous spear user in anime is Ushio.

Need I say more?

but what about guts from berserk? That badassery is more than enough to favor swords over spears.

I'll refer you once again to Ushio.

No way. Not only did Ushio vanquish an entire army of demons years before Guts and without being maimed, he also tamed an exceptionally powerful one of said demons and used him to slaughter his brethren. Did Guts do that? I don't think so.

Anvils. Those haven't been in style since the Loony Tunes, and Animaniacs I guess.

Put a few minutes of thought into the question...

Close-combat, swords/hand -- Viewers/readers look forward to the battle scenes. Sword and hand fighting can be exciting because the MC is up close with his opponent. The thrill of the interaction. However, it can also be agonizing if it gets confusing to follow or too lengthy without shifts in tempo.

Range weapon, guns/bows -- Battle tactics are more cat and mouse. They can be fairly near or sniper distance, but maintain somewhat of a range to utilize the setting more. Narration tends to swing between the MC POV and opponent's POV, giving us alternating one-sided insight. Sometimes the drawback is not enough action. But a writer can make up for that with good writing skills.

Other weapons, mid-range -- This would include staffs, spears, longer swords. And even the unique fishing pole. The battle has both the close interaction of MC/opponent, and a greater use of the setting. IMO this would be the easiest to write to keep the audience entertained.

Personally, I like the battle tactics of ranged weapons, but the scene must be well-written to enjoy it. I also like hand-to-hand combat because of the character interaction.

To answer the question, though, I think writers need to invest a little creativity in the MC's weaponry - whether it's a sword, gun, staff, fist, or even the nearest box of tissues. Uniqueness goes a long way -- think Hisoka's slashing card swipes, or Saitama's chopstick take-down (manga bonus).

Flamethrowers. Not enough flamethrowers in anime. This is a major crisis that needs to be tended to.
