Maybe I just had too high expectations for this coming into the second season.

And I must say I'm really finding it off putting how Yotaro and Konatsu treat each other as both brother and sister, even down to calling each other that, as well as husband and wife. Of course they aren't related by blood but when it comes down to "Hey sis, hold my hand because you're my wife" it's just not sitting right.

Interesting story bits this episode, though, and I hope they don't totally drop the question of the baby's real father.

That was a powerful episode. I haven't been fully sold on Yotaru, but he grew considerably on me after his actions against the Big Boss. His rant also give an indication of what his own rakugo could be like. Yakumo and Big Boss' relationship was surprising; didn't think those two would know each other well.

The whole issue with Yotaro and his Yakuza past made me reexamine the first episode of season 1. Back then, Yakumo rejected the notion of Konatsu doing rakugo as a profession. In addition to being a traditionalist, Yakumo might have considered that Konatsu would be in the spotlight. If she ever achieved a shin'uchi status, the media would be roused even more so than for Yotaro. Her origins would eventually be uncovered, and the scrutiny might be too much for her to bear.

I had the same teary-eyed expression as Yotaro when Sukeroko's Inoroki was performed. Yotaro might be the only person to see Yakumo perform that story. At first, I was taken aback since the liveliness and energy was so uncharacteristically Yakumo. In that way, it was also refreshing. Someone in reddit did a video comparison of Sukeroko and Yakumo's Inoroki. So much of the detail was retained!

Couldn't help but laugh when Yotaro brough a goldfish for everyone but Matsuda. That guy has been a staple of the Yakumo household even before Kikuhiko. Its a little nuance, but no one refers to Yakumo as Bon or Kikuhiko anymore. That really drove the point that Kikuhiko no longer has close companions (Matsuda perhaps).

Episode 4

Shin is just adorable there getting into all this rakugo stuff. He sure has his grandfather's fascination in rakugo. Komatsu had shunned rakugo, but she puts on a great performance at school, and seeing that she used to wow customers at a soba shop that she certainly has it in her. Too bad she sees rakugo being too manly for her, but nevertheless hat was great to see her perform seeing that she's only willing to do the strings.

I thought I would never see the day of Konatsu doing rakugo in front of a crowd. This is has to be the most heartwarming episode of the season. A happy family like no other.

That may have been the best episode of the entire series so far. I think I enjoyed her doing rakugo more than all the others combined! I literally laughed out loud while she told that story. I hope she does a few more throughout the show but it seems like she probably won't. Either way this has me excited for the rest of the season.

That little kid simply stole the hearts of everyone around him. And now, after watchin' Episode 4, I'm reminded of that Gintama episode when they can't decide on a name for Kyubei's pet. XD

I wasn't expecting to see Konatsu perform Rakugo in front of an actual audience! It was like a dream come true for her. No stage experience, yet she felt like a natural. She had full command and just killed it with Jugemu. Kobayashi Yuu's voice was so clear and crisp. After hearing that, how could anyone not want to hear more from her? Haven't seen her like that since her childhood. Also, seeing Konatsu be so joyous was a treat in itself. I loved her grin near the performance's end.

That was an amazing gift from Yota. Those two have formed quite a loving family.

Overall a pretty solid episode, especially Konatsu's rakugo. All of the comments she herself was making about not wanting to do rakugo and just wanting to focus on her shamisen playing were actually painful to hear. Now that she has a taste I hope she somehow finds it in herself to continue with what she really loves.

For those of you who are interested, NHK's english program "imagine-nation" recently made a 30-minute special episode dedicated to this show. They show plenty of cool "behind the scenes" features with respect to the series' production, animation and we even get to see Yotaro's seiyuu in action!

Here's the link: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/vod/imagine/20170124/

Enjoy!

Thanks much for this. The hosting was kind of annoying but it's similar to what you get in Japanese on Japanese television so I guess that's not a shock. The meat of the feature, though, was very insightful. They kind of brushed over the first season but given the timing of this episode I guess that's not too surprising. Good stuff and well worth a watch.
