Are people tone deaf when they hear themselves sing?

As I'm typing this, my mom is trying out this new karaoke app. Don't think she knows how bad she sounds.

Now I'm questioning myself when I sing. My friends tend to be average (or terrible) too. Jazz hands kind of make it look like they know what they are doing

This is why its usually best to record yourself and adjust your voice until you can hit the notes consistently. You can't trust your ears when it comes to your own voice... at least not until you have trained yourself.

Yes, whether speaking or singing, your voice sounds different to yourself than it does to others. That's one of the reasons instructors will make you do scales so often, you're essentially learning how to touch-type with your vocal chords.

Maybe!! When I sing, I thought I definitely sounded awesome, until I record it and hear it for myself and I can't stop cringing as to how bad it sounded Dx adding reverb makes it better tho

I know I can't sing, which is why I restrict singing to when I'm in the car alone

Maybe, I know I suck at singing though.

Most people hate the sound of their actual voice anyway.

Not tone-deaf, but what you interpret and regard from when you speak or hear yourself through projection is different.

So, somewhat xD

Yes, I really hurt a girls feelings once because of that. She hated me ever since but better she hear it from me than someone worse. But that was years ago. I bet nobody from my old life even remembers I exist dispit how infamous I was.

I'm very self-aware of my off-key singing.

For sure! The same with your own body odor. You won't know since you're already used to your own smell. It's best to record your voice to hear how you really sound.
