Sorry to say but unless you have a damn good excuse, "like you're in an iron lung" You have to go. Ya just gotta do it.

Got it twice:

1st time - After several hours of waiting my number got called. Went to the court room for jury selection. Defense and prosecution asked us questions. I said I couldn't stay because My wife and I had an immigration meeting for tomorrow (which was true) I was dismissed but it took all day. It was boring. One guy got off saying he's racist towards black people. The defense was black, and he got off lickity-split.

2nd Time - This was much better. The waiting pool room had WiFi so I just watched Netflix and Crunchyroll.I was in the room for about 4 hours before they dismissed us.

Check to see if they offer WiFi. Bring a tablet, book, handheld. There's a lot of waiting.

If you want to actually experience our judicial system they will ask for volunteers. There's usually a dozen or so who will do this. It might be a good experience, character building and a good story to tell.

It should be mentioned that you should be prepared for any sort of case. The first time I got called to jury duty it was for a molester preacher case.

I'm exempt from jury duty because I know of this one power jurors have that judges and lawyers don't want you to know about. So if you basically say that you know about so and so power you're basically exempt from serving on a jury.

Sheesh that first sentence sounded clickbaity.

I'm sure you still have to do everything leading up to the jury election process, but yeah, you can just say you know about it and you'll probably be exempted.

Anyways, I'm not a legal expert so I can't talk about why jurors who know about it are disallowed, but yeah, it's a thing that exists and you're not supposed to talk about

I was part of a juror. Part of it was boring, but part of it was like watching a freaking movie.

The lawyer literally screamed at the witness saying "DID YOU, OR DID YOU NOT HAVE ANAL SEX WITH YOUR UNDERAGE WIFE??" over a case about a fucking gang-related stabbing. Trying so hard to discredit him.

Yeah, though I learned about it from a different source than the website.

People who try and get out of jury service are worthless piles of trash that should pack up and leave the USA.

I'm a liberal and I approve this message.

I've gotten summoned a couple times. I did get close to being on a jury once, but was dismissed after attending for almost two weeks. My work was really pissed off at my for being "off" for two weeks, even though I had to report every day to the courthouse.

If anything the process you are referring to seems to me as another check against legal overreach. If that's true, looks like I'll never have to serve on a jury either then, but what do I know, never been called for jury duty so far.

Twice
The first time the court stood me up and said it was my fault for not calling the day before to see if they changed their mind on the threats of fining me if I don't show up.

The second time went like this:
They called 40 people to sit in a small room and waited until it was time to start.
Half hour video on how to act as juror.
Tea.
14 people from the 40 were interviewed ( I can't say what happened to them because I wasn't a CHOSEN ONE)
26 people sat around for two hours waiting to hear if they will get called.
those 26 people got sent home.
I lost some more faith in the effectiveness of the justice system that day.

They always notify lots of people so chances you'll eventually serve are small.

Prepare yourself mentally to see some weird stuff.

Do everything they tell you to do and put everything else on hold. Don't be a smart-alec.

Keep all your receipts for your expenses that day so you can get reimbursed.

You will "waste" a lot of time, but remember it's your civic duty. Don't make yourself feel like jury duty has completely ruined all your plans for the day.
