Plot

Link awakens from a deep sleep, and a mysterious voice guides him to the now-ruined Kingdom of Hyrule. He meets an old man and learns that a century prior, Calamity Ganon appeared and laid waste to Hyrule. Unable to be defeated, it was sealed within Hyrule Castle while the ruins were ravaged by nature over time. Although trapped, the Calamity Ganon has continued to grow in power, and Link must defeat it before it breaks free and destroys the world.[12]

Anyone planning on getting this game? Not going to lie, when I saw the presentation by Nintendo Switch, this was the game that I got hyped the most. There's some gameplay footage out as well:

Went with the special edition mostly for that sweet looking case. I could get it for the Wii U, but I really want to experience it on the Switch.

The trailer they showed last night was pretty intense! With voice acting to boot.

Ahhhh I am SO hyped. The gameplay is gorgeous, but they still kept that whimsical LoZ tone. I'm definitely the most hyped about this, too.

I used an explosive barrel to break a crate and it cooked the apple inside. Nice.

I've watched some streams of it, it looks like a very good game.

The Switch itself doesn't look like a very good system though (underpowered, the left joy-con issue, can't be charged while using the kickstand, etc.). If I buy a Switch at all, it will be solely for this game.

Also planning on getting a Switch for this game only. It looks amazing from what I've seen so far and maybe even the best Zelda since Wind Waker imo. A Link Between Worlds wasn't too bad either. But I really like what Nintendo wanted to achieve with Breath of the Wild. The reviews have been amazing so far and this gets me even more hyped for the game!

Warning: First Paragraph is going to be Nearing Fanboyism

"Zelda: Breath of the Wild" reminds me of the world I had thought that Ocarina of Time was going to be when it first came out (sue me, I'm old). An open world, fresh for exploration. OoT was as much of an open world you were going to get back in the N64 era, mind you - but the idea that you could do anything, at any given time, depending on your stealth and skill ... that's something that has only been done in the first LoT (in a manner of speaking) until BotW.

Now that's out of the way...

I'm really digging BotW right now. I find myself exploring regions just for the sake of exploration. I'm glad I started collecting the Zelda Amiibos before the Switch and BotW were released (finding Wolf Link, which spawns a wolf that fights alongside you, will cost you about $30-80 depending on where you go right now). They're a kind of cheating - so I only try to use them when I'm stocked up and am looking for the armour (each figure can randomly grant you the armour from the game that it's from). While there's an established storyline and all, I think that the beauty comes from meandering around and finding enemies that smash you up in one hit (ugh) or running away from Guardians as you shoot them with ancient arrows...

I'm enjoying it. As for the Switch, that's for another thread - but, I have no qualms with it either.

This game sucks... The story is a joke, and final boss fight/ending worse so. You are going to dump tons of hours in a game, only to be sorely disappointed. Anticlimatic, a staring contest between u and boss, and 0 fight in last stage; PAUSE, ITEM CHANGE, CONTINUE, and the few, disconnected end dialog lines sound like a Trump rally. It is like Nintendo does not realize WTF they are doing. Oh, wait, they don't.

Watch this approx 30 video featuring the end game. I did post a comment within that explains further details.

Indeed, anyone giving this game a "10", clearly hasn't beaten it yet. "BEST (ZELDA) GAME EVER!??!?!?" Please, seriously, lay off the cannabis, why don't you? But no matter...

Was planning to buy this but I'm afraid I won't even be able to play it and just end up wasting money on another dust-collector. It looks amazing but playing it means having no time for a bunch of other things I need to do.

I finally beat it last night, but still playing it. I don't know what you're smoking but I think it's the best Zelda since Ocarina of Time. If you judge the game solely on the end boss, you're really missing out on a lot of good titles (in my opinion). The exploration is the joy of the game; which is why other games with similarly weak storylines (Fallout, Witcher, Dragon Age, etc) are popular. Dragon Age had a decent storyline for the first three, then with "Inquisition" it became weak and focused more on exploration.

10/10 for me still. I have Horizon Zero Dawn and Nier: Automata waiting to be played but I can't stop playing Zelda... lol

...that's why they all suck too. But Zelda games specifically (used) to be core story-centered; holy edict from Miyamoto himself, until they got lazy. It is "The *Legend of Zelda", not "Some random sets of disconnected plot devices of Zelda". Fixing this game up does not require a brain surgeon or something either, it is doable. I mean, what game developer could have watched the end game and thought that was good idea?

If video games are ever going to hit mass market appeal to the 7 billion Humans of Earth, and not stay limited "to the kiddies/delinquents", it needs to have a purpose. That as like, 1000 years from now, humans will still treasure. Like any other cultural relic of human history. Nonsense like this, only serves to weaken the long-term value of such; yes, "exploration" on its face may be fun to some as a short-term "feel good" high, the long-term viability of such, in question. The literary value of such, "nerfed", it is so.

If people think this is a "10", then indeed they do not know what a "10" even means. This imperfect game cannot possibly be considered "perfect", or why do we even bother with such foolish "ratings"? And that is precisely the problem, the destruction of the human capacitance for advanced intellectual observation.

Perhaps, I simply care too much. In either case, it shall be so...

I think you're overlooking the fundamental purpose of video games. No matter the epic, it's not going to be categorized on the same level as that of classic literature. Video games create too much of a difference of opinion and there's not much basis of objective logic regarding what is considered a "good" game or not.

For example, there are people who claim that Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI/VII lacked a good storyline and that they were both crappy games. Though, you'll also find that Final Fantasy VII had such a strong fan base that Square-Enix is doing a "remaster" of it (much to the chagrin of those who hate it with every fiber of their soul) to bring the story "back to life" with modern technology. Even among the masses, there are those who disagree for their subjective reasons (like you disliking Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while the majority likes it). The "opinion of one" does not dispel the opinion of many - just confirms that there's a large gap of what is seen as "good" or "bad".

With novels/literature, on the other hand, there are experts who spend countless hours of research investigating it on an "objective" level - creating dissertations, research paper, reports, and the likes on one novel. Until video games get beyond the "this is entertainment/fun" and more into the "this is a work of literature merit", your proposed ideal world will never happen. This would also require all video games to be unified to a specific "process". Storylines would have to follow a linear progression (with minor deviation), there would need to be structure (localization would not occur until the "literary merit" of a game had been established so that a team with a track record of being genuine with translations could undertake it in their respective country), and similar objective processes that would essentially kill the gaming industry.

TL;DR: Video games are fundamentally designed for fun. If you're not having fun playing the game, don't play it. To expect anything more than fun means you're essentially overthinking the process and hoping for something that deviates from the purpose that the game was made for (which is fine for the self but would fail when implemented as a standard).
