BS in a science (Geology), minor in Mathematics and GIS. Nerdy af here... Only this is I prefer shredding over bass... I can forgive you for that though (my friend plays bass).

Masters in Mathematics. BS in Computer Science. Associate's in Nuclear Engineering (my fault for dropping out of the program when I was young and stupid but I loved nuclear engineering). Minored in theoretical physics (when major was math) and psychology (when major was computer science). I know your nerdy af pains.

Hey, bassists and guitarists don't always have to be at war with one another. The bass can lift up the octave of a guitar when played correctly. Yet, that doesn't stop the bassist from going into some funky af slap bass .. nor will it stop the guitarist from shredding like a demon straight out of hell. I play both, just that I prefer bass (personally). There's just something that cries out to me when I get into that deep bassline or go into some Jaco-like melodic tone.

Jesus, as your tag says... You really do get it! That is quite the list of achievements there. Now I feel like I need to go for a Ph.D in Geosciences now. I loved my minor in Mathematics until I got to Partial Differential Equations and Proofs... I mean god... 1 + 1 = 2.. prove it. AHHHHH! I still cry about it to this day.

As for the war between the bassists and guitarists... You cant have a band without both! All my metal bands have at least one bassist and one guitarist. When there is peace between the war, a true song can be played. To clear something up, I am absolute shite at guitar haha. I actually prefer fencing. I just played a bit when my dad showed me his guitar he made by hand.

My father has a Masters in Computer Science, a BS in Mathematics and Associates in Civil Engineering. You two seem pretty similar... though my father has a good 24 years on ya!

Be still, my heart. Differential equations and discrete mathematics are my thing. I was going for my Ph.D. in Mathematics but life kind of got in the way (was taking care of my grandparents when I was in the graduate program, starting my dissertation - pulled out since they couldn't survive me taking 2 hours of the day going back and forth between college and home). I still have my 230-odd page rough draft of my dissertation.

I can understand how PDEs start to kill the love for mathematics. That's kind of the breaking point for those who are closer to science than mathematics (much like bass and guitar, ironically enough).

The problem I always encountered, as a bassist, is when you get a lead guitarist who gets a little too cocky. Like you said, you kind of need both in some situations and the lead guitar doesn't lead the tempo - the drummer and bassist are the gods of time in any band. The guitarist is the god of harmonics and its octave range; something neither drummer or bassist can do with ease (I can play most lead guitar songs on my bass.. but, that's just not what it's there for).

Ha! In 24 years' time, I'll probably be that silly old guy who wanders around and talks to himself (I already jot down a lot of metrics in a notebook so I can conduct analysis, graph them out, and make predictions on certain things [like traffic lights]).
