I've watched a smattering of series from the 1960s to now. I'd recommend watching some stuff from the 1980s. Not all of it has aged poorly. If you like "Mean Girls", you'll like "Oniisama e". It was one of the first, more mature anime series that discussed topics such as homosexuality and questioning ones sexuality in a mature way. "Creamy Mami", as far as a magical girl series goes, was pretty good too. While Princess Sapphire was the first magical girl, it wasn't until Mami when it really became a powerhouse. I'd recommend them both to you as good series to watch from 1980-1990s. And with Creamy Mami, you have the added bonus of watching an old Studio Pierrot series.

I don't really like One Piece. The animation is bad, though it's not all about animation obviously. But for me, it's just weird. I've seen a little bit of it and it can be funny, but still, just too weird for my tastes.

Aah that's why.

This is not necessarily unpopular, but it is unpopular among the actual anime community.

I think Naruto is a legitimately great show. I don't take the fillers into account when I say this, though. Maybe it's just because I'm young, but I actually think it has a great story and a lot of kickass fights. Many of the side characters are awesome and the world is very interesting. It gets too much criticism imo. Is it as good as something like Hunter x Hunter? No. But let's be real, it's insanely hard to be as good as HxH.

Naruto was a great show. Now Shippuden, or however the hell you spell it, was awful. God awful.

Hmm, well I'll be honest, I haven't finished Shippuden. (I know it's still going, but I'm talking about where the manga ended.) However, from what I've seen (up to the war), I was including that in what I was talking about.

Yeah, but I've seen enough to know that it's not for me. It just doesn't do it for me. For me, I know that if an anime is good enough, it'll hook me in right away. Drifters did that for me, as well as Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate (greatest anime/ova ever), Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Black Lagoon and the ova, Berserk (90's and now), Teraformars and a couple others. I'm not going to watch episode after episode of something I don't like in order to like it. Think of it like coffee. They say it's an acquired taste, which means you have to force yourself to drink bean juice that tastes like dirt, until you like the flavor of dirt. Same with alcohol, 99% of it tastes like shit.

In conclusion, in my eyes, a good anime should hook you in right away. If it takes more than an episode or two to do that, than it's probably not for you (you in a general sense).

I can't stand long-running shonen, other than Detective Conan. I watched like... 30 episodes of Naruto back in high school and hated it, ~10 episodes of Bleach; same. I think I got through half an episode of One Piece. It's just... not nice. I don't like that type of thing at all.

I have a particular niche of storytelling that I like, and it just so happens that in modern times, most of that type of storytelling that's done at all is done in anime. Also, anime has the pretty boys. But I guess I wouldn't really consider myself an anime fan, since I don't like shonen, I don't like shoujo, I don't like, like... Fate/etc. style stuff, whatever you'd call that. Pretentious "dark'n'gritty" otaku-targetted stuff.

...... but I really like Valvrave. It has flaws but like...

This. This is what perfection looks like.

Let me just go lie on the floor and cry over this group and how beautiful they are.
Also, just... how much personality they all have just in that one picture. The biggest problem with the show is that these guys have like 30 seconds per episode. But they manage to pack more amazingness into those 30 seconds than most entire series have in their whole run, so...

(also the scene with Akira and Marie with the pickles. uuuuuuuu I just like. Every time. And yes, I rewatch it frequently.)

(It's also... dark, but not gritty. The characters are so lovable and the ending is hopeful and stuff. (spoiler)'s last words are about how (spoiler) is his friend. Ughhh this show is so... it is exactly what he says he is. A big dose of sugar into a bitter coffee world. Precious darlings. I just wish more of my favorites had lived.
.... I still need to finish that fanart of 914.......

Kyoko is not a more-experienced version of Sayaka; Kyoko never manages to live for anything but herself until the end. Where Kyoko ends up - finally doing something for someone else - is where Sayaka started at the very beginning of the series. And though Kyoko does represent one of the widely-held approaches to life, she was a boring character. Oh yay, a feisty girl. And that was it. Kyoko functioned as the Walpurgisnacht to Sayaka's Homura: she existed to develop Sayaka's story and character, and little more.

Kyoko sucks. Sayaka is where it's at.

This, except also, I don't really like Madoka. I feel like it beats you over the head with how TRAGIC! and DARK! it is. Not my style.

I do like Homura, though, because I like her character type (e.g. Umi in Love Live, Kuroh in K).
Honestly, though? Homura-> Madoka reminds me so much of Nina-> Euphie in Code Geass.

Oh! Another unpopular opinion. Nina is precious and deserves hugs. She's just a teenager who's never been loved or listened to, and Schneizel manipulates her, and she doesn't deserve all the hate she gets. The scene at the end where Lelouch tells her she's truly amazing... it's so emotional because he really listened to her and cared about her, and he's probably the only person to do that, ever, besides Euphie.

I don't know if this is unpopular or not, but... Lulu is sublimely beautiful, not just in his looks, but in his character, at the end, once he's let go of revenge and become the sort of person who can do what he does at the end.
And... semi-popular opinion?

This isn't really much of a reach, but Cowboy Bebop was no better than mediocre or average to me and maybe slightly better than average if I'm feeling generous.
