Crestfallen is often a word to describe an unexpected and more intense disheartened/defeated feeling. Unlike melancholy which is a general feeling of sadness or depression, it's most primarily used to convey depression due to news or an event. It's not a commonly used word anymore outside of novels and novella, however it's not so aged that you *can't* use it in writing; you just can't use it in everyday speech without coming off as either strange or pretentious or both. Anyone who has felt that sinking feeling in their gut or the shame of losing has felt crestfallen and that's pretty much everyone eventually.

First off, I would like to note I am not aware of any politics on CR, lol.

I feel crestfallen usually after a dissatisfactory social encounter or missed opportunity, or if I fall short of a goal. As with burning bridges, I feel crestfallen after separating with someone I used to like and be friendly with, yes. That's usually my immediate response, actually. Not anger, but sadness.

And I haven't used the word often. o: But it is a nice word.

I can't say I've ever reached the same level of crestfallen as these guys...

I've heard of the word, but never used it. I just say sad and the like. To answer your question, I have felt crestfallen more often than not. Even so, I try to maintain a positive outlook.

About a year ago I had to explain to a co-worker what crestfallen meant when I used it in a sentence. They never heard of it and thought it wasn't a real word. After they googled it and saw it was legit and I used it properly in a sentence I felt like a freakin' genius.

Didn't even know that it was even a word, and I'm glad that you defined it. But I guess I get that feeling more than I actually should, but it's whatever.

In spite of his services, Lenthall was not included by Cromwell in his new House of Lords, and was much disappointed and crestfallen at his omission.
