Lonely Japanese gamers giddy over the prospect of getting to smell girls in VR titles
Posted 1/18/17

Japanese tech startup VAQSO thinks it’s time for VR games to have their realism enhanced with appropriate scents. The company is developing a compact device that attaches with magnets to the bottom of VR headsets such as the PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift units. Roughly the size of a candy bar, the device is completely wireless, connecting to the rest of the VR system via Bluetooth LE, and releases puffs of various aromas to accentuate the in-game action.

The device is still in the design and testing phase, but VAQSO hopes to be able to load between five and 10 individual aromas into a single unit. For example, the developers say, the device could release the smell of gunpowder every time your in-game avatar pulls the trigger of a gun.

But while that sounds exciting, what’s really got the Japanese Internet’s heart racing is the prospect of using the technology to let them smell girls, and it’s actually not such an unlikely scenario,, given how enthusiastic developers of romance simulators are about using VR to let players spend time with virtual females.

Japanese Internet commenters have already started speculating about the innovation potential:

“Come on, make ‘Beautiful Girl’ one of the scents!”
“Would than mean it smells like perfume? Or like sweat?”
“What if they make one that smells like a girl’s period…”
“Pervs :)”
“Middle-aged dudes will be all over this.”

Well, on the bright side whatever technology they end up using can help better VR in other applications.

Sometimes scientific progress comes in very strange ways

You can say that again.
It's interesting that there's an ongoing evolution of Virtual Reality right now. The way that the Japanese market is going to utilize VR is .. concerning, to a degree. Though, as you said.. "sometimes scientific progress comes in very strange ways". Then again, I'm sure the American market is going to utilize VR for similar, if not exactly the same, ways if the adult entertainment industry gets ahold of it (or, rather, when it does).

Well yeah a lot of the modern conveniences we enjoy started out as research for military applications. Then after they either got what they wanted or failed they reworked it into a civilian application eventually.

Porn sites did major contributions to the internet industry. Hell, a lot of things improve things in awkward ways. War improved computer tech... Cold war put people on the moon and helped with the space industry...

Odd things do odd things to improve other odd things...

I do think it would be funny af to play MGQ in VR though. I can think of a few scenes that would be nightmare fuel...

Hm, it would be fun. Esp if you could speed up time in it for cram studying. They did this in the SAO light novel series. I forget which one. The adult industry though... Well, overpopulation may never be an issue after it! Win win, if I dare say myself! Add in neuro transmitters to feel pain for those with a 50 Shades kind of attitude and man... The world is set!

If I was going to play a game in that kind of world though... It would be a realistic flight simulator or sword combat game. Alfheim Online would be nice but magic would make it annoying. SAO itself would be fun... but the level system would fuck it all up.

One game that is based on pure technical skill would be damn FUN!
