A female announcer on the program reported the name of a classmate Ai-chan supposedly said she liked when asked "Is there a boy you like in kindergarten?" The program aired the real name of a boy that the idol goes to school with.... After the program announced the boy's name, Okuma said Ai-chan broke down in tears. While sobbing, she said, "Even though I said there's no one I like... Why?... They would lie?..."

in japan, there's tremendous social pressure to keep idols "clean" and even the smallest scandal (yes, an idol having a crush is considered a scandal in japan) can permanently damage one's career for good. idol being in a relationship is a well-known taboo in Japan. Fuji TV certainly knows this, and they are well aware of the damages they could have caused to the idol. despite being fully aware that they could cause lasting damage to her career (which may have been her dream), Fuji TV lied and claimed she had a crush on a classmate. why? to attract more audience and get a few extra yens at a child's expense. it's worth noting that the idol in question is only 6. years old.

Fuji TV still refuses to even acknowledge any wrong doing, claiming it's "investigating"

J-Cast contacted Fuji TV asking if they would issue a correction and apology to Ai-chan, but they refused to comment until they knew all the facts.

on a positive note, her representative worked quickly to correct the record, and she have plenty of supporters.

tl;dr Fuji TV tells lie against a 6-year old idol, damaging her career. claims no wrong-doing.

credit to someone over on MAL for bringing this to my attention. Fuji TV producers should apologize already.

good question. in the west, it's illegal to have minors work. but maybe it's different in Japan
as for the why, you'd have to ask Japan.

Jesus, that poor kid. Her age disturbs me far more than the 'scandal'. 6 is far, far too young to have that sort of pressure in one's life. Doesn't Japan have any laws banning child labor? :s

remember that in Japan, even small things can have lasting damage against an idol. they're supposed to be "perfectly pure" and having a crush goes against the taboo. the idol industry in japan is brutal. love live fans know this too well.

>laws banning child labor?
apparently not. even Fuji TV would not risk airing something that violates the law.

Yes, I am unfortunately very aware of how the idol industry works. I personally find it abhorrent - even moreso now that I know they idolize even children. That's just gross.

Lying media. Very dishonest.

But yeah, at this point I kind of need the word "idol" to be defined to help me understand how a 6-year-old girl can be one.

6 years old is indeed unusually young, but it's not unheard of for minors to work in showbiz. That's a thing even in the US. Of course, there are a number of restrictions in place to protect them. I assume the same is true in Japan.
