For prior conversation in anticipation of the show, see /forumtopic-919343/granblue-fantasy-anticipation

Plot Summary

This is a world of the skies, where many islands drift in the sky. A boy named Gran and a speaking winged lizard named Vyrn lived in Zinkenstill, an island which yields mysteries. One day, they come across a girl named Lyria. Lyria had escaped from the Erste Empire, a military government that is trying to rule over this world using powerful military prowess. Gran and Lyria, in order to escape from the Empire, head out into the vast skies, holding the letter Gran's father left behind - which said, "I will be waiting at Estalucia, Island of the Astrals"

Episode 1 is out on CR.

Note: it aired back to back today as two episodes as part of the TV series. They named it like a 1-hour special but it's two episodes of the main TV series.

It's not going to begin until April, but seeing that it was originally supposed to air this season that certainly appreciate that a sneak peek for the first two episodes is available.

Episode 1

Once gain, Bump of Chicken hits it out of the park with its opening song that is very fitting of the show's atmosphere.

And so it begins with Gran finding a girl who had dropped from the sky and is running away from an evil empire as she has some sort of special power that the empire is looking to exploit. Gran and Katalina are out to protect Lyria from those scumbags, and Gran takes one for the team. But he recovers and Bahamut is summoned and unlike in the other gaming franchise Cygames is known for, this one is under the control of the allies. That was quite an interesting start to this.

Episode 2

Gran miraculously recovered from his injury, but as it turns out he died and was revived by joining Lyria's soul, so the two are bound together. Of course, there's no way that Gran is going to just leave Lyria, not that he has any choice. But nevertheless, he has a destination in mind with that letter. This does a nice job in following up things.

So with that, it will be awhile before the adventure continues, but it's a great thing that the sneak peek has the first two episodes as it finds a nice stopping point before beginning the show this spring. I look forward to watching more of this.

I think both the first two episodes introduced the premise and intro story well in regards to this fantasy world. I've never played the game before so this is completely new to me and we got to know a little bit about the main characters.

So far, Katalina impressed me the most so far. She has that sort of leadership-like personality. Gran and Lyria has some character chemistry already so I expect their relationship to develop more. In regards to the action, it was alright. Not too impressive but works. Gran has a lot of potential imo as a character.

The OP theme song by Bump of Chicken is pretty noticeable. Pacing feels consistent so far too.

Very pleasantly surprised by how good the first two eps are. I'm just sad we have to wait so long for any more.

Overall a good intro for the series. First episode followed the first few chapters of the game pretty well. They ripped a lot of the soundtrack right from the game. They also had a lot of little nods with character poses from both the story elements and battle parts of the game. Also a few of the abilities used were spot on (granted they didn't get that deep into it yet).

I really like both the OP and ED, but prefer the ED theme.

Katalina was awesome (as she is in the game) and I really liked Lyria as well. I hope they eventually bring Djeeta into the anime as well.

Overall as a fan of the game I am very happy with these first two episode.

*edit* I love this shot from the ED:

Loved the animation except for the CG dragons, especially with this rough around the edges style they just stick out too much oh and the Snarf-like sidekick is annoying as hell.

Surprisingly good start. Together with Zestiria and Little Witch looks like this will be a great season for fantasy anime.

Edit: nvm it will air in April, geh

Dang, have to wait for April to see the rest but I think it'll be worth it. Enjoyed the first two episodes. The animation on the fights looked particularly fluid. Also eager to see how the magic system will be elaborated. Katalina is the stand out so far. Miyuki Sawashiro gets a lot of cool roles. Though she nearly ended the entire journey by the second episode. Guess that's her first time piloting that machine.

Bump of Chicken did the opening? No wonder it reminded me so much of March Comes like a Lion's first opening theme.

Final Fantasy called. It wants it's Final Fantasy back. Even the Bahamut design was straight up from Final Fantasy.

Seriously, though, this was a pretty solid start. The only part I didn't enjoy was the ending of the first episode. On the production side I found it really jarring how the Hydra totally came out of nowhere then basically disappeared for a few moments while everyone was talking only to appear again. On the storyline side, it felt a little rushed there in how all of a sudden Gran and Lyria knew about summoning Bahamut. While a nice moment, that could/should have been played a little better.

I liked that they didn't shove in obvious game mechanics despite it being based on a game unlike some other game based fantasy shows. I also liked that they had a nice sense of pacing and didn't try to do or tell too much. This didn't feel like an advertisement to go play the game so much as it felt like an actual anime adapted from/inspired by the game.

Now we just need to wait until April.

Actually, Final Fantasy's Bahamut designs were most likely derived from Dungeons and Dragons so it shouldn't really be seen as unusual if the designs are similar considering the genre. And while it wouldn't be surprising for Granblue Fantasy to have derived its design based on some of the more popular representations of the dragon, I wouldn't say it was copied straight from Final Fantasy. That said, Final Fantasy has used a number of different designs to represent Bahamut over the years, so if you happen to have one in mind that looks exactly like the Granblue Fantasy Bahamut, I'd be interested to check it out.

It's not perfect, of course, but the humanoid dragon (fairly definitive "arms" and "legs") with the stoic arms crossed pose is a look for Bahamut that FF has used multiple times.

Here's one from FFX:

This got halfway to my "probably won't watch more" category the moment cutesy mini-dragon thing showed up, but once it all unfolded it's back as a possibility. Characters are likeable (except for annoying cutesy dragon thing) and Katalina is excellent. I enjoy quest stories, even if cliched, if they don't seem to be only going through the motions, and in the case of game-tie-ins, don't seem too obviously gamelike, and this one is doing fine so far in that regard. Nothing super great, but with potential to be pleasant light entertainment.
