Well,

I just saw the same thing.

Though, Ctrl-R a couple times and I could carry forward. I'm actually watching Fairy Tail on one computer and posting this on another. The HTTP servers and VOD servers are different machines/software/services. My guess is that CR is a Service Oriented Architecture. While PHP is a great language, maybe they would do well to implement some services in Node.js, given it's much better scaling capabilities. If it's a scalability problem, then it looks like it's with their HTTP servers, rather than their streaming servers.

Yep, I got tired of waiting for Crunchyroll to stop crashing, so I went & watched Dragon Ball Super on YouTube, instead.

The streaming issues were so bad, I had trouble watching other animes, too... :-/

So, another Saturday has come & gone, & once again, I had to go to YouTube to watch an illegal upload of Dragon Ball Super, while paying a monthly subscription fee to watch it without ads, & be able to do so legally.

If it wasn't for the other shows I watch, ie, Naruto Shippuden, Interviews with Monster Girls, & other videos behind permanent or timed paywalls, I would have already cancelled my subscription.

At least the site didn't crash, but nevertheless things haven't been completely working as I had to refresh pages so many times due to these errors going on.

The funny thing is, the site did actually crash exactly around Saturday night when around Dragon Ball Super is about to be streamed. Always happens around that time for some reason recently. Hope it gets fixed next week.

What this all eventually boils down to, is an organic & completely non-intentional DDoS circumstance on CR & its services. While CR WAS experiencing some actual malicious DDoS issues a while back, the browser check they do now is in effect acting as a means to try & buffer the site & its services against overload.

If increasing the cost of subscription by $1-$3 per month would allow them to fix their bandwidth & architecture issues, I'd gladly do it. My TV provider's anime VOD content is so anemic as to be insulting, & most other sites are plagued with DMCA floods & virus nests.

I would also cough up the money if they took it and put it into optimizing the performance of their achitecture. @CrunchyRoll devs you may want to take a look into the Play framework. It runs on the JVM and uses either Java or the elegant Scala language. It can serve up 60,000 req/s doing basic benchmarking. It kind of blows Node.js, PHP, and other stuffs out of the water.

I can't remember the last time I could watch One Piece on a Saturday night, although I know it was sometime in 2016. I may be more forgiving if CR ever gets around to fixing the comment section.
