OK I know everyone still feel some type away about the election but taking the long view where do you think the country is headed?

In 1776 America declared its independence from Great Britain and 13 years later in 1789 elected it's first president.

Below is a picture of a chart. The chart shows who was in control of the government for the past 160 years of the 240 years it's been around. In those 160 years America has been through The Civil War, The Great Depression, Women's Suffrage, The Civil Rights Movement, six moon landings, The Great Recession and a bunch of others wars, some of which it is still in.

How has America done so far and do you think it's headed in the right direction?

Well, I'd say with all of the hardships you listed, the movements and wars, we're sill here, I think this nation is pretty hardy. As for the "right direction" I think only time will tell.

America doesn't stand alone. Some of our greatest triumphs were due only because of other nations and our interaction with them. And it didn't matter who was in charge of government: They act on behalf of us all.

We are in a global world now. Isolationism isn't an option. World War is prevented entirely by trade being essential and interconnected economies that to unravel would mean downfall of nations.

It's pointless to speculate how we will "do" under new leadership. Most of their actions are determined by things outside of their own control. Let's sit back and watch to see what direction it takes.

i'm hoping for everyones sake it is. i feel it's at a powder keg and there could be a civil war, but from the ashes of this mess there's potential. i feel the country has woken up and want change by any means, hopefully it'll be a second 60's where people protest and demand change over a full blown war. only time will tell though.

I suppose that depends on whether or not you view our position as hegemon crumbling as ultimately the best thing to purge the regressive tendencies of our politics. I like to think that after we get done self-immolating we might be a bit wiser for it, but regardless dark times lie ahead.

No. Trump's presidency already moved the climate change pages, and LGBT sites. I guess if we aren't living when the planet dies, it doesn't matter. It just matters to our grandkids.

Can't say I feel encouraged, but we've been steadily improving since the recession so maybe we'll keep moving forward.

I feel like spending and armed conflicts have been out of control for at least the last 16 years and in order for the country to properly plan for the future the current wars need to end. If those trillions of dollars were spent on scientific advancements, space exploration, healthcare or infrastructure the country would be better off.

As long as we keep expanding business and the military, nothing will go wrong.
