It generally is, which is why the joke goes that a drug habit would be cheaper.

There are things you can do, though. Rely on ad-based free streaming, accept cheaper, lower quality figures, reduce the overall rate of intake for merchandise, limit your travel to conventions (if you even can do that) to maybe once a year or once every two years, things like that.

I know no taxes or any kind of payments but you got to enjoy it while it lasts because sooner or later taxes will come in and rent. But I don't doubt I'm going to have problems resisting to buy more stuff for myself.

one could buy a complete BD collection for way cheaper. importing individual volumes cost $250-300 per series, but a single complete disk can cost around $30-40 (assuming it's a series licensed in America). the quality might be lower than regular BDs though, idk.

I'm older and have about 84% of disposable income ...
Then again, I didn't get married nor did I have a child. I'm in a relationship but it's pretty chill.

I'm starting to think about it and about average what me and my parents pay a year is like in the thousands on merch character statues, manga and anime services like $100 a year for premium + membership also games like I can't buy a game of Final fantasy or Tales of Xilia without getting the collectors edition. What do you guys think do you think being an otaku is expensive or just being a anime fan in general?

In My Day, Junior(tm) there was no updated CR simulcast streaming, and you had to BUY all your anime--Until the early 00's, when Netflix at least had some disks by mail, and you could rent it. (Or search for whatever Blockbuster had on their "Alternative Animation" shelf next to Ralph Bakshi.)
When the Internet came along, if you watched gray-market fansub .MKV's off of BitTorrent, even if you destroyed the files by the time they were licensed for disk, the industry still called you a bad person.

It was even worse back when we had to buy it on VHS tape, for $30-$35 for TWO episodes. A month.

In those days, we had a saying: "Anime: Drugs would be cheaper."

Ah yes...
The years where I spent most of my time translating and fan-subbing. This was around the time that I was still in Japan - I started to do a lot of fan-subbing when I was bored. I remember buying an official Ranma 1/2 OVA in Japan for $25 and thought I was in a space-time paradox. Living in Japan really made being an anime fan cheap as hell compared to the years leading up to it.

It helps knowing how much you need to pay for things in the long term - paying them off - and making sure that you don't spend too far outside of your budget. As such ... my "anime/otaku level" has decreased tremendously over the past decade. I watch anime, sometimes get a figure. Most of my "insane purchases" are reserved for video games/consoles, monitors (five monitors connected to this computer now, another 5 on the work desk), and desktop/computer goodies. I buy a few figures here or there, usually the $50-100 price range since I'm not a fan of the $250+ ones that are too large... but you get the idea.

The four figurines I have altogether cost me 218.94$. That's pretty much all of the anime stuff I've purchased.

I do. And really, I think what you're describing is really the typical "anime/otaku level" of most of us that have money to spend. I think the only things I see people do moderately often that weren't mentioned in your post are cosplay (which I guess can count as an insane purchase seeing as most people spend lots of money on it) decorations (like posters, curtains and shirts, which don't cost much at all) and gunpla (which takes up an average of $40-$60 a month for the average gunpla fan from my observations) I guess it all depends on the person.

I checked the site but wasnt able to find anything Kancolle related. Not that I mind since I don't even like that at all. What was the other figure though?
