Kimi no Na wa, and anime in general, is getting no love at Oscars this year.

http://en.rocketnews24.com/2017/01/25/anime-left-out-your-name-fails-to-secure-academy-award-nomination/

It gets beat by CG titles that gives more whiz-bang. More "technical" impression.

I think the article is right on listing one of the possible causes- the Oscars committee doesn't really understand anime.

I don't think something like emotional impact, which is the biggest draw for me personally when it comes to anime, matters to these people as much as something less subtle, like some whiz-bang scenes hits you in your face (or OH this is drawn DIFFERENT)

Who cares about Oscars when it comes to animation anyhow. These guys have zero real taste. Their idea of beauty this time appears to be how much compute cycles a studio can lavish on rendering a scene or how "un-cartoon" something is. "Your Name" to them is probably just another cartoon, with big eyes.

Why would they judge a film they have not seen?

There is also the type of film it is, ala "Oscar Bait". It is the same reason why you won't see horror, sci fi, or fantasy, superhero, or anything that falls out of the conventional heart rending drama movies anywhere near the red carpet. It is a disgusting bias towards appearing artsy and respectful of the arts, by people who least of all understands their own view on literacy and film.

To be fair, Your Name had a very, very limited screening in the United States. Over here, it only aired in AX and a week in December. It won't be featured in more US theaters until later this year.

Even if it was nominated, I don't think it would beat Zootopia; which is more socially relevant to Americans. That said, I did enjoy Your Name more than any of the nominated films.

Well, to sum up, the reasons were it wasn't a Disney or Pixar film, 2 down (even though that didn't help Finding Dory), it wasn't made stop motion (although they usually nominate only one of this style) 2 down, and, for what I've heard, 'cause I haven't seen it, it doesn't do anything as unconventional (or "artsy") as telling the story without dialog, only throught the visual media itself, last spot taken. The Academy went with what the have been known to choose in this category, which is really predictable because my first 2 points in the process of choosing the noms have been followed for a really long time, which, usually, leaves 2 spots for "wildcards" (as I said before, it's rare that they chose 2 stop motion pictures in one year), which allowed other anime movies to be nominated in the past, this year was different, even thought they could have just nominated Finding Dory and called it a day with the most unamusing set of nominees ever (not shitting on any of these movies, I'm just saying it would have been just too predictable and save), they only left open 1 unpredictable spot and decided that The Red Turtle was a good example of the power of storytelling in animation, so they went with it. I really wanted an anime movie to be nominated this year again, but I'm not shocked that it didn't happen. I'm shocked that they went with 2 stop motion movies, though.

The Oscars also snubbed the movie adaptation of the novel "Silence", directed by Martin Scorsese. But then again, Andrew Garfield is nominated for "Hacksaw Ridge", although in my opinion, his performance in Silence was much better.

Anyways, "Your Name" should at least have been nominated. my friend tried to ratify the Academy's decision by saying "well, it didn't release in the US until 2017". But you know how the Academy is, bunch of old white dudes who don't really care for anime anyway. They're more into old school artsy movies like "La La Land".

Let's be honest. Unless the name attached to the Animated Feature is either Miyazaki, Ghibli, Lasetter, or Pixar, The Academy doesn't even acknowledge it exists.

Odds are they are just going to Rubber Stamp whatever film has "Disney" next to it without even watching anything.. Half the judges don't even consider animation worth their attention

The oscars suck but its hard to judge the merits of a movie that no one saw. Espically when there is pretty strong competetion in the animated category this year. Its 1000% funi's fault. If Disney had the rights they would have released it nationwide in January and promoted the hell out of it.
