Shuffle has one of the nastier yandere characters I've seen. We're talking Single White Female levels of crazy snap. The only other female character who was worse was Lucy from Elfen Lied.

Sometimes it's funny but other times it's just plain sad.

There's a perfectly good reason for that: Fear. Not the character's, just real Japanese teen boys'.
Boy and girl students are kept "responsibly" separated in school activities since the beginning of school, so girls grow up without any real comfortable idea of how to talk to boys (and go around secretly putting love letters in shoe lockers so that Senpai will notice them first), and boys grow up without any comfortable idea of how to talk to girls (and either decide that sports is more interesting, or have to admire them from afar, and objectify them into object-fetishes of glasses, maid uniforms and twin-tails).

And because Japanese boys are terrified of girls, they naturally EXPECT to be turned down. For them, it's just Life During Wartime, so they've instinctively created their own object fetishism of thinking that girls naturally will act like complete arrogant bee-yatches toward them, develop ambiguously-BDSM princess-complexes, and narcissistically treat them like dirt.
Unless you have your own maid, of course, have a girl forced to move in with you, get stuck into a girl's dorm by mistake, have an adorably devoted little sister, or end up on the wrong end of some ancient traditional marriage contract.

Interesting. Didn't know.

I know it's in their nature to never pick a fight with a girl but there isn't anything wrong with defend themselves. I just feel sorry for some of them because they probably want to stand up for themselves but they can't for some reason. Like the female characters are abusing the male character just because they can and could get away with it. Doesn't seem fair and very double standard.

Does anyone else feel like this? It makes me wonder about some of the males in Japan.

What do you think?

If it's a male MC that I've grown to like...maybe I'll feel sorry for them.

Otherwise? Nah. Kind of hard to feel sorry for a fictional character, especially a harem MC. but then again, maybe male fans feel different since a MC is supposed to be a stand in?

I always feel sorry for the girl that always loves the MC and adores him, only to get friendzoned by the MC in favor of the female MC, who's probably an asshole.

You mean the cliche brown / black hair guy in the cliche school battle ecchi animes? Yeah I feel sorry for them, the guys should be the stronger characters, not the girls imo.

Which manga and/or light novel has non-spineless male harem leads?

(I'm including anime and VN's in this)

Shuffle, Kanon, We Without Wings (Hayato has a harem), Yosuga no Sora, Absolute Duo, Sky Wizards Academy, Anti-Magic Academy, The Familiar of Zero, and Chivarly of a Failed Knight just to name a few.

I hate the harem leader who just is super confident and messes with girls more e.e

Agreed. Akatsuki from Aesthetica is easily the worst harem MC I've ever seen in my life...

Too many anime using the same formula these days. Like movies these days all being part of this or that franchise we never see anything fresh like the creative explosion of the early 80's. So scared of something different that might not play for 'targeted audience' and therefore risky production wise.

Chivalry of a Failed doesn't really count. Kinda harem like aspects, but story revolves around the 2 main characters relationship.

Not too many true harem anime that I can think of without a total loser for a main character since the goal is to make a main character that the average total loser can self insert themselves into. If its a action themed anime you will find that the MC doesn't actually get stronger through hard work, because that will alienate the core viewer by making them think that they aren't perfect now and should go work out. He just magically does better while staying his loser self while everyone falls in love with him.

Chivarly does indeed count. He just chooses like Rin in Shuffle.

And that's why I gave a list, there are plenty of good ones, people just don't know where to look so they automatically think all harem MC's are "loser self inserts" for whatever ridiculous reason. Most of those weren't battle harems, but the MC's of Absolute Duo and The Familiar of Zero actually did get stronger through hard work. And the rest of them I listed weren't spineless or losers.

I might be more sympathetic to the harem leads if 99% of them did not look exactly the same.

Thank goodness for protags like Keitaro (Love Hina) and Kintaro (Golden Boy). And Tenchi, too, though he technically started the particular sub-genre of "magical heroine harem".
