Does this game have any single-player mode or is it strictly online with a subscription(ugh) ? On the steam store page it sounds like it's online only . I have the demo on my pc & it looks fantastic in 4k ! Avg is 89fps completely maxed at 4k setting .

If you're talking about Final Fantasy XIV - it's only online. It's an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) that requires a subscription to have access to their servers. It is a pretty fun (and sometimes, glorious) game. I own the base game and its first expansion - just haven't really played it recently (hey, I even have it on PS4 .. a friend was trying to get me into it). My suggestion is if you like it a lot - throw down a month's subscription to see how much you play and if you like it enough to keep it going. Otherwise, just move along.

Yup , I meant XIV , oops ... That's what I was afraid of . I play Borderlands 2 a lot (almost every night) , always solo , w/o having to worry about a subscription . I tried playing online once (by mistake actually) on Left for Dead 2 & was being screamed at almost as soon as I started playing . Dropped trying to play that one . On BL2 , I had 2 players drop in my game (even when set by friend invite only) & they immediately tried to duel me for my gear & kept trying to kill my character . If I shot them their health never changed at all , so I figured grievers and just shut the game off . Guess I'll just play the demo from time to time & move along ...

I got really excited at the prospect of an online FF IV for a moment there.

FF14 does have a pretty supportive community for the most part, especially if you fall in with a good free company (aka guild). You can also play a very very large portion of the game solo if you're into that (it's what I've done). I wouldn't let the fact that it's multi player only turn you off too much if you're really into it otherwise.

That said, you're not getting away from the sub fee and you're also not going to be able to totally do everything solo.

I also suggest at least giving the free trial a shot.

If you want to avoid playing an MMO and just want a single player game, all the Final Fantasy games are single player aside from 11 and 14.

You'd probably be better off trying 13 or 15 if you want some single player eye candy type of stuff.

Though personally I don't like the new combat systems that have been in place since Final Fantasy 12. I enjoyed the classic menu based games of 1 through 10.

I really hoped it was just an option to play online . The benchmark does look glorious . I just can't justify paying an online subscription since I tend to bounce between games . Steam has spoiled me with the free online access on almost all the games there I own . Not knocking it , I realize it costs money to run dedicated servers for hundreds/thousands of people to play on . So if you own on console , you still pay a fee above the Xbox/PS fees ?

FFXIV isn't on Xbox One and you don't need Playstation Plus to play on PS4.
