Yes, its just polite to use them to address other people. It's how this southern girl was raised. Sir (male) ma'am (female). It shows respect to whomever you're addressing. Nothing wrong with an "excuse me sir" or "thank you ma'am". It's manners.

I called my friends Dad "sir" and he tweaked. He said it was disrespectful and to not ever call him that again. So confused even to this day
