I think if an anime can properly end under 50 episodes than that is fine. Some shows end under 50 episodes and still leave you satisfied and content (like Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop). If a show ends under 50 episodes and I feel like it should have gone longer to wrap up properly, then the show should have gone longer (like why Tokyo Ghoul needs another season. We don't talk about Root 1). While I love spending more time in the worlds that these shows create, if a show is long just to be long and make money than it ruins the entire show. If a show makes many episodes and doesn't feel like it is trying to be long (like HunterXHunter) then I would love that. Sorry if that is a little confusing.

I don't really care (although you'd be surprised by the amount of short running shows in the early 00's and late 90's but I guess it just depends on what your definition of old is)

On the one hand you had a filler full show that never ended or had an anime original end; and on the other you have a short running show that never ended or had an anime original end. And neither would get second seasons.

Granted we have more shows running now, so we have more variety in what you want to watch.

Depends on the anime I guess. Imagine 50 episodes of big order...the nightmares.
I do feel like original anime would benefit from standard 24 episodes across the board instead of 12 like it usually happens. While anime adaptions do get sequels, if they sell well, original anime rarely do and they suffer a lot from the forced fast pacing.
I think visual novel adaptions should have 50 episodes though. For manga 12 or split 12 works fine, LN adaptions should be prohibited if they are generic harem rom com it's hard to say. I'd watch 50+ episodes of Youjo Senki and Grimgar; but I wouldn't watch more than 12 for most of them.

I haven't watched too many 50 episode shows that were worth going that long. Some did though and they built up their story nicely over that time. But I'd be happier with some of today's shows going to 25 episodes just to come to a satisfying conclusion. If the story can be done and done well in a 12-13 episode show then by all means, but some feel too rushed by the time episode 12 comes around and even by extending out a few episodes would fix that.

But overall most shows these days are 12-13 episodes. Probably fits today's short attention span kids better. Of course I shouldn't talk. I've got so many partly watched shows in my queue it's not even funny.

It is just the modern model. The old 50 episode anime series tended to be backed by toy makers. Those shows would keep on running as long as the toys kept selling. It was on TV at a decent time so people could actually watch it.

Today, aside from the few long running shounen series, most anime runs in the middle of the night where it's only competing against hair regrowth informercials and stuff like that. The anime is, in a sense, an advertisement for itself. For this sort of thing, it is much safer to just make 10-13 episodes, one season. That way if it's a bomb you don't have to keep making more. It is purely for business reasons that most shows just get one season.

Shows that got two seasons recently often bombed in the first season and I suspect they regretting having to make the second one. Endride was awful but they had to make a second one. Buddy Complex was actually good (IMO) but too few people bought it so they shorted the second season to a 45-minute special, and they were one of the lucky ones. Promising to make two seasons is quite risky today unless it is a really well known show or based on a really well known manga and even then, most shows get worse sales as time goes on so making 50 episodes is a risk.

Now, with modern day streaming making waves this might change though I still think Netflix and Amazon Prime prefer to order shorter seasons and then order more if it gets lots of views rather than ordering up 50 episodes all at once. Once again, they lower their risk of spending a lot of money on a series that half the audience drops after 3 episodes.

Like it or not, anime is not just an artform, it's a commercial artform, a business and a business needs to make money or it will go bankrupt.

No, not really. Of course it sucks when an anime which would need a second season never gets one. But then you still have the source material. Original anime can feel a little bit rushed sometimes but at least they usually have a finished story and no fillers and there can be a lot of fillers if you watch an old original anime (not really a surprise because they never knew from the start how many episodes they can make before it gets canceled).
Most importantly, many anime I watch don't need 50+ episodes.

I like anime ranging from 12-13 episodes if a story can properly unfold in that time. I like anime with around 50 episodes as long as there isn't any filler.

The 26-episode series ('two cour") duration is my favorite. It's long enough to build up some interesting characters and have a plot with decent complexity and some twists. Occasionally the writers can tell a story that doesn't feel rushed in twelve or thirteen episodes. But many recent series have felt SO rushed, like Izetta and Magical Girl Raising Project last season.

Sometimes I wonder if/when the anime industry will start experimenting with series with 10 or fewer episodes, and passing it off as "real" anime (as opposed to those 4-minute shorts series, etc)

I remember the 50 episode either having a lot of filler toward the end or making some extreme stretched to fill in that entire 50 episode run.

Some anime are fine with 12-13 episodes (generally the generic comedy stuff).
Some do good with 24 episodes.

My problem is the ones that we will never see the ending. A lot of these are based on light novel series. The anime is as much an advertisement for the LN series as it is anything else.

Fifty episodes is either too many, or not enough. Most anime have a single series of 12-13 episodes, or a double series of 22-24 episodes. Anything more than that, & the series either has to have a long running storyline, like Dragon Ball Z, or had to keep reinventing itself, like Mobile Suit Gundam.
