My dad's first series is still his favorite of all time. Crying Freeman, I wonder how many people have even heard of it.

Crying Freeman was one of the first anime I saw. I caught it on TV in the mid 90's. I remember watching it thinking "Wow this isn't Looney Tones","Tom & Jerry" or "The Simpsons"

I went back to the channel to see what else they had. I got treated to shows like Zillion, Venus Wars, Castle Cagliostro, Goglo 13, Robot Carnival, Dirty Pair, Barefoot Gen, etc. Anime back then was extremely niche'. In fact it wasn't even called Anime, we coined it "Japanimation"

I had my mom wake me up every morning at 6am just to watch Dragon Ball off my local whatever affiliate. It always got to the point when Goku turned great ape then started over. This was way before Cartoon Network got a hold of DBZ.

I'm also a huge fan of Fatal Fury OVAs & movie. Terry Bogard still to this day is still the fucking man.

Oh yea when u ask my dad about his favorite assassins, #1 Crying Freeman followed by the sniper elite Golgo 13. There's something about video game anime OVA's. Fatal Fury, Samurai Showdown, Sonic, and of course Street Fighter II. If only video game movies were that good!

I used to own VHS copies of Voltron long ago. When I was living with my older sister, I'd "borrow" my brother-in-law's VHS copies of Akira, Ninja Scroll, Project A-ko and Venus Wars to name a few.

Anyone remember when Sci-fi aired anime movies? Also, I think it was either TBS or TNT that aired Monster Vision, and I remember watching Lilly Cat on that.

Just Sailor Moon.

I had the one with the episode where they meet Sailor Jupiter and then the one where they meet Sailor Venus. And I also had the first and third movies.

I probably had a Pokemon one, too.

My first anime DVDs were Fullmetal Alchemist and DNAngel, though.

I am not the oldest here but I started watching anime in the '70s. As mentioned above it was "Japanimation" back then. Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers, Gall Force/G Force, Grendizer, Mazinger, unless some of those are '80s.

The first ones I bought on VHS, however, were from the '80s and '90s, Robotech (I later bought the original Macross on DVD), Macross Plus, Golgo 13, Casshern Sins, Patlabor, Dominion Tank Police, Dirty Pair, Ghost in the Shell, Wicked City, Planet Busters, They Were Eleven, etc. I would go to my local comic book store (where I also bought manga) and I'd buy VHS tapes of anime without even having heard of them before. If I didn't like them I could bring them back and the store would refund me the price minus a rental fee and they'd put them up for rent. That was a good store.

That store started me on reading Japanese too when someone ordered but didn't buy the first volume of Battle Angel/Gunnm in Japanese. I read the translated versions at first but the translations went way overboard, as I realized when I started the Japanese version (painstakingly at first, using a dictionary for every kanji). I learned Japanese and stopped buying manga in English years after that pickup.

I also switched to importing my anime from Japan at the same time since I don't need subtitles so my old VHS and DVD collection from R1 is tiny in comparison to my collection of Japanese import Blurays. I don't have as much time for rewatches anymore so I have greatly reduced my buying habit. Will probably stop soon as I seem to only watch the discs once now, as soon as I buy them, so aside from things I can't get here at all like Macross, I may stop entirely.

Dragonball Z episodes taped in Japan and fansubbed, complete with Japanese commercials and VHF static. Also, when I was a teenager there was a local public access channel that played El Hazard, Slayers, and DBZ at like 1 am. That was my introduction to anime in the 90s.

Scamper the Penguin and Superbook. I can't go back that far without being a little tyke.

I also remember getting Speed Racer and Sherlock Hound from Blockbuster on VHS.

And I'd pester my mom to go to the video rental place further away because they had more Sherlock Hound tapes.

My first anime was Dragonball Z - and from there I caught some late-night anime like Galaxy Express 999, Akira... so very much in the VHS days.

I ain't old, though. ...except I do go to bed pretty early... ...and I do have trouble staying up late... ...and I ... nevermind.

My spirit though, is like a child's. Kids tend to like me and I think it's because we're on the level...

Watching anime goes back to when I was a kid, with G-Force/Gatchaman and the Robotech/Macross adaptations and the Nausicca dub on HBO but I didn't know they were anime until Sailor Moon and that was the first VHS I bought, fansubs from VKLL (still have them). Then started buying anime on DVD.
