Hello there! This is going to be a forum where I regularly(ish) write with mini lessons concerning grammar. So far, I have two lessons planned out on commas, but I'm thinking I'm gonna let this go where it wants. Now, the reason I'm doing this is because of how much I see grammatical mistakes in what could be stellar responses in RP groups, and I want to fix that. Well, I also kind of like grammar and need to spend my time on something, but oh well...

Soooo! The first part of Lesson 1 will be coming out soon, can't wait to see you there!

-Ms. C

Rule #1: Use commas to separate items (nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc.) in a series and/or list.
In general, punctate lists as follows: A, B, and C- include the comma between the last two items. (Well, this is an Oxford Comma, and there is a hot debate about this, but in my class, we shall use it. Unless you can give me a legitimate argument against using it.)
If the order of the two items is interchangeable, add a comma in between: A, B or B, A.

Example: The Avengers, Cabin in the Woods, and the Dark Shadow are the best movies of the year.
Example: The neighbor's cat was a furry, fierce feline.
Example: The air was hot, dry, and dusty.
Example: The sleek police car sped down the street.
Example: The fat, cranky mother hen clucked loudly at me.
Example: We hopped, skipped, and jumped our way down to the water.

Pro Tip: The placement of a comma is correct if the comma could be replaced with the word “and”.

Rule #2: Use a comma with a coordinating conjunction to join complete sentences.

List of Coordinating Conjunctions:
-For
-And
-Nor
-But
-Or
-Yet
-So

Example: Take the sword of your father to the castle, and find your destiny.
Example: Is this a genuine diamond, or is it just cubic zirconia.
Example: I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid you would be angry with me, so I said nothing.

Pro Tips: These sentences always follow a similar structure: Complete Sentence, CC, Complete Sentence.

*Warning: If two sentences include a ‘because’ between them, a CC is not needed. *

Rule #3: Use commas after introductory elements and expressions.

-An introductory element may be a noun, an adverb, an interjection, a phrase, or a subordinate clause (part of a sentence that depends on the other part).
-An independent clause (complete, stand-alone sentence) follow an introductory element.

Example: Luckily, the rock missed my head.
Example: However, the rock struck my climbing partner.
Example: “Dude, are you OK?” I asked.
Example: To put it bluntly, I can’t afford this car.
Example: For fans of George R.R. Martin, the next novel can’t come soon enough.
Example: In other words, this jambalaya is delicious.
Example: John, please pass the cornbread.
Example: Because I passed the final exam, I earned credit for the course.
Example: Until we hear thunder, the game is on.
Example: Although he drank coffee, he still had problems staying awake.

Rule #4: Place commas around interrupters and nonessential elements in a sentence.

-Such extra information could be a single word, phrase, or a subordinate clause.
-If the extra material tells you which one, it is essential and therefore shouldn’t have commas around it.

Example: The only way out, if I am correct, is up through that vent.
Example: Harry’s lifelong nemesis, Lord Voldemort, had finally returned from death.
Example: I’m afraid that, to put it bluntly, I can’t afford this car.
Example: The Constitution, which was written in 1789, sets forth the structure of our government.
Example: The girl who scored the winning goal was my sister.
Example: My sister, who scored the winning goal, has played lacrosse since fourth grade.
Example: Tell me, John, who will you be voting for?

Comma Rule #5

Use commas in conventional situations (dates, addresses, etc.)

For example, use a comma...

- To separate a tag question.
- To separate act and scene number in plays.
- In dates (between the day and date, between the date and the year).
- After names.
- When need to separate dialogue from dialogue tags.
- In addresses( between street address and city, and between city and state).
- After the salutation in a friendly email or letter.

Example: Do you have any tickets left for Friday, June 1st, 2012?
Example: My dentist is Alice Parsons, D.D.S.
Example: There is only one way out,” Bond muttered.
Example: SBHS is located at 550 Dorset Street, South Burlington, Vermont 05403.
Example: Dear Ms. Goldsmith,

Please excuse our daughter, Margaret, from all final exams.

Sincerely,
The Wilsons.
