With the Overlord compilation movies coming out, I was wondering why studios would waste money on this? I might be able to understand some movies that are based on an older series (like the mobile suit gundam 3 movies), but Overlord is barely a year old. Couldn't they use that money to create another season?

Compilation movies can improve some of the most important scenes of the original show. The Gurren Lagann movies are a perfect example of this, but I do understand why people feel disappointed when the movies don't add anything new. Who knows, maybe they'll announce the second season of Overlord at the end of the movies, it wouldn't be the first time that something like that happens.

If it was a waste of money they wouldn't be doing it, for one thing. As foreigners we're taking anime out of its native media environment when we consume it so things like this can seem weird, but Japan has its own media consumer culture it's primarily aimed towards. Compilation films are a franchise investment that serve a purpose over there.

instead of creating new series with new contents.. some like to just cut and paste scenes from the series and put it in a movie

I followed the series of most series but will not bother with compilation movies.

I like em as a way to re-watch my favourite shows. It's easier and more fun than watching through the whole thing again.

I think that compilation movies can be good for when you feel like re-watching a series without spending as much time that you would on the tv series. Some good examples would be Gurren Lagann, Madoka Magica, Macross and the Nanoha movies. More so for the latter two than Gurren Lagann, as most of Gurren Lagann's charm comes from the gradual build-up. When it comes to Madoka Magica and Lyrical Nanoha, I find that I would rather watch the compilation movies instead, since it's far less time consuming and better paced, as well as having improved animation and voice acting. The dub for the Madoka Magica movies were much better than the tv dub, and in my personal opinion, better acted than the Japanese dub for both the show and movies. The movies for Lyrical Nanoha and Macross were vast improvements over their original tv series, despite a few hiccups with the pacing.
I feel that Overlord is a series that would benefit from a compilation movie. It's one of those series that gets adapted rather awkwardly in order to properly fill out 12 episodes without ending in a weird place while being done chiefly to promote the source material, a compilation could smooth out the poor pacing and lack of worldbuilding that was present in the show.

Well, if you're going to have a recap episode, you might as well get paid $80 at a time.
