I mainly got a premium membership for the manga app, and because I like to support official (legal) channels. Turns out the manga app is a broken mess and has been for years according to reviews. The ps3 anime app (reason 2 for going premium) only works when it wants it seems. Then I go on the site to try and watch DBS (one of very few shows I care about) and of course the site can't handle the traffic on sat nights/sun mornings so I can't even do that, and am forced to go back to the pirate sites just to watch a show I'm paying to watch...

So can somebody please explain just what the fuck is the point of going premium? And how the fuck is crunchyroll still a thing when it's such a mess? I'm trying to find a reason not to cancel because I really do like what CR is attempting, but my god... this feels like a bad joke.

(I contacted support, was told they'd put it through to management and should get a response soon. That was yesterday morning. Sorry if this comes off as shitty, but I'm really salty with CR right now.)

The site is likely the target of a DDoS attack. Most days (including the weekends) the site works fine. You just happened to subscribe at a bad time.

Premium membership gives you access to anime the week it is released and you don't get ads. I think that is worth the monthly charge. The premium membership also gives you access to premium membership only anime. You can tell if the anime has a picture of a crown on the portrait. An example is the original Naruto series. That is for premium members only while Naruto Shippuden is for all members.

Edit: DDoS is Distributed Denial of Service just in case you didn't know. There are things sites can do to lessen their impact, but they cannot 100% be stopped. It is how the internet as a whole is designed to work.

Adding to what Khaltazar said; premium also grants deals in the shop.

Thanks for the reply. I know what DDoS is, and CR does seem to be a common target, but i don't know. Maybe its just me. I've been a subscriber for two months and it seems CR is down more than up on the weekends. Which is my main chance to watch anime. As I said my main drive for premium was the manga app which is a total mess. (and HD DBS) It just bugs me that I pay for premium yet still end up watching DBS elsewhere because CR is junk on the weekends. Maybe I'll check out Daisuki. See if its any better, cause as it is, as much as I want to support CR and what it's trying to do for anime, I just don't see what my money is getting me. Maybe if CR allowed time limited downloads for offline viewing? I can get over the manga app, there are a million sites and apps out there for that, but not being able to watch what I want, when I want, while paying, is a huge letdown.

The premium sub adds 1080p, or HD content, and legally see videos early. regular member can see them later. Can get both 1080p content early elsewhere, but it isn't legal. But if you don't care about that, the premium doesn't add anything of value.

I would use the manga part, but doesn't seem to have that much content and the app doesn't work.

Oh and for mobile users, you can watch without ads with premium. Ad blocker can block ads on my pc, haven't found one for my phone that does anything.

That is really it. I became a premium member because I wanted 1080p and decent translations, where downloading or streaming elsewhere can be hit and miss. HD content for sure, but a lot of the sub quality has become just awful over the years. I do like to support content legally too, and this option lets me afford to do so. Just wish they had more content that I actually like. A lot of my favorite series they don't have, like db and dbz, historys strongest disciple, yu yu hakusho, etc.

I haven't looked into it, but one thing I've seen plugged a lot, is that premium+ subscribers get to use beta versions of stuff on the website, they also get free tickets to CR's conventions, or something like that.

Yeah. I was wondering the same when I was trying to watch my queued shows last weekend. Saturday morning was good for me as I've managed to watch four episodes. But during noon, when I tried to watch DBS, it went full ape-shirt on my PS4, PS3 and PS Vita, and it frequently stopped loading the video on web version.
And yes, I ended up watching the newest episode on a third-party channel. It was very dissapointing to see that from Crunchyroll.
