Martial arts gives you a sense of belonging, insight into another culture while practicing and the ability to defend yourself against most attacks. On the other hand sport like handboll, football, basketball and etc don't really provide those things. So I'd say martial arts are pretty good and very useful

As someone living in a area where the police themselves have admitted they've failed I can say knowing martial arts really doesn't do much for or against you.

But many martial arts don't really give you that much muscle. For instance Akido is all about using your opponents energy against them, so you can go up against someone twice as strong as you in terms of muscle and still get them on the ground with Akido and similar martial arts

True fact: Toyotomi Hideyoshi was a monster who instigated one of the worst persecutions, both severity and breadth, that the world has ever seen. Quoting him for inspiration is literally like quoting Stalin, Hitler or Mao.

That said, I've been doing the Brazilian variety of jujitsu for five years now and it definitely is not worthless. However, iado is not BJJ. Iaido is barely useful as a martial art and more akin to baton twirling or color guard. I strongly urge you to consider BJJ or even judo or karate. The only people I've met who do iaido are neckbeard types and old men.

I don't believe that anything is useless if you enjoy doing it. Plus you get to learn how to defend yourself if a situation calls for it. Win win I'd say.
