Alas, 'tis it be like complaining as to why you cannot see active lava flows in NYC, a polar aurora in Singapore, or something editable in UK. Some things require "travel" to see in life. Contrary to common Internet "knowledge", there indeed "isn't an app for everything", as it were.

However CR site will likely be doing a live broadcast of it as with other "cons" so there is kind of an app? Ahh gomen was playing devils advocate again. Who cares its CRs first, pay the $$ so you can say you were at the first. Maybe if you bring your ticket you get a free month sub ?

Ahh, but a con is more then just a video feed (of a live panel), is it not? The sights/sounds/smell(maybe not so much) of the realm, taste of the food... ability to buy stuff at vendors; the free goodies, the social interaction among fans. The reason u go to a convention vs "phoning it in", is for the intangible assessts of a realtime meeting. Something a "Hikikomori" hiding away all day, can never comprehend. There is no app for that...

But no matter... BTW, the "big deal" isn't that it is the first event, rather that it exists at all. The anime industry, unlike video game, has yet to hold a singular company-based event, of this scale anyways, outside Japan. As I compared before, Blizcon, a event exclusively for one company's products, versus a tradeshow for an industry.

High bar has been set... Shall see if it is /worth or not...

Isnt that sad though? Arguably more Anime viewers in say the US then in Japan. Hopefully such event will become more commonplace.

Amount of viewers don't matter. Only ARPU (average revenue per user). Japanese spend far more on anime then Americans do; for now the domestic industry still greater then "rest of world", so until that changes it shall remain for now.

Here is intersting site, the Association of Japanese Animators (which CR is associated member) for more info:

http://aja.gr.jp/english/japan-anime-data

According to 2014 data, in "limited terms" ("real numbers") the ¥185 billion industry that exists, only ¥20 billion of that comes from overseas revenue. That means, even if CR was 100% of "non-Japan revenue" (so no FUNimation, others), it is only around 10% of the market at best.

BTW, that ¥20 billion is around $200 million or so, at 100-1 exchange. As part of their "million people" announcement, 2014 was sited at .5 million paid subs. If you assign $7USD per sub, perhaps add 1 or so to reflect other revenue ("free people", other sources), u get estimated CR revenue around $50 million.

So like CR, is like 1/4 of the overseas market, which is like 1/10 of total anime market; so CR is like 2.5% of total anime market. Not that big.

So we don't matter, in other words.

I'll join in the "If it was closer to me" camp here. I understand why they're holding it where they are but it would be nice if it were at least more centrally located so that it could reach more fans. Sorry CR, but if I'm going to travel long distance there are many other places and things I'd rather travel for.

It makes more sense to hold the convention in California for two reasons.
1) The company's HQ is in California
2) 1 in 8 Americans are Californians (12.5%), and that means more people can go. They want there first to be successful.

There are a couple things concerning about the announcement:

1. MAGWest (MAGFest) is the same weekend in the same convention center. MAGFest is bigger, longer running, and more connected someone is going to be in the "secondary" space and I don't believe it will be them.

2. Since CR is citing things like E3 or Blizzcon in their first press release, it seems like they're going for a more corporate show feel rather than a "hangout con". This would be an overall mistake as there are fun things to do at the above mentioned but it lacks community and purpose that doesn't involve a sales pitch. Which defines the difference between an EXPOsition and a CONvention.

3. August! Late August! I do not understand why conventions do this to themselves. Your biggest targets are firmly back in school and their parents just put up a ton of money for supplies so you are purposefully limiting yourself of the two biggest resources that are needed. This is only trailed closely by being the hottest month of the year that does not mix with the potential crowd and cosplay in southern California.

It would be nice if they would have it somewhere in the middle of the States not on the west coast. RIP all of us on the East coast.
