I find it complex...

On the surface I look at something like beauty and I think that it is simply preference. But what is preference? Is it a genetic whisper that pushes us to find something beautiful? Is it something that roots itself in us?

I ask this because there was a time in my life where I found myself reprehensible. I would look in the mirror and automatically go to things like, "Wow you look so hideous." "You're so skinny and frail." "There is nothing to your complexity that others don't already have more than you."

I think, over time, that voice begins to change though. Slightly at first, I'd have a day or two where I'd wake up and say, "You aren't that bad." or "It's kind of cool how you think about this in such a unique way." And then, I begin to love myself in ways I thought not possible. I begin to see myself less of as a piece of failure but more of a changing idiom that builds something I love. But why? Why is it that words root themselves to beauty over a period? Why is it that we can walk in a room and say, "That IS beautiful." But also find something completely reprehensible and in time find it to be beautiful? Where does an affinity come from?

Which is more real?

Low self esteem and beating yourself up is pretty normal.

Hideous objects might become beautiful through nostalgia, and shared memories. Can memories and ideals be beautiful?

As far as mathematical beauty, the fibonacci sequence seems beautiful because we keep choosing to use it. Then there is the golden ratio, and general preference for symmetry in human faces, even though no one comes close to this potentially ideal mathematical concept.

I'm cis-female, but there was a time when the face in the mirror just didn't seem like me. It wasn't what I wanted to look like, or how I saw myself, but it was good enough. Slowly I've become more fond of what I see in the mirror, though I also like experimenting with makeup to test how much I can alter that appearance. (My goal seems always to take this human face and make it appear not human, though I haven't had much success.) I recognize my face as my own, though it is just another human face and not something I find beautiful; I know that someone else might see my face as an object of beauty, mostly because I have seen beautiful faces, whose beauty didn't come from mathematics or would be duly recognized by popular opinion.

As far as "skinny and frail" Donna Noble may not approve, but millions of fangirls disagree with her opinion.

Just tell yourself that there's always someone out there who is more hideous than yourself. Works for me!

+1 for the Doctor who reference ^-^.

As far as the rest of your post, I agree! To me, beauty is no longer a blooming flower but a weathered one. I suppose that's part of getting older.

It comes down to perspective! If you tell yourself the right things your entire interpretation of the world changes.

Beauty is the quiet moment when the wheel to which you are chained catches on something and stops turning for an instant.

Beauty is the emotional connection that evokes a sense of ease, love, and/or desire. The significance a person places on those emotions to something or someone is roughly their estimation of it's beauty.

I.e. finding a poem beautiful. It's the emotions drawn out the words that typically gives a poem beauty. The same value goes into color, sexual preferences, etc.

Beauty is an idea that others might see eye to eye with.

Without the mass of followers beauty is only limited to just you yourself seeing the world in your own light.

Ultimately beauty is determined by the individual, and immortalized by the people, as it should for now and years to come.
