When you get down to it, people have some really screwed up looking noses, and people seem to think those are beautiful, so there's no accounting for taste.

"Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it."

If you look at beauty in merely the aesthetics you will find that there's not a unified definition of the word. The understanding of beauty is one that is influenced by a plethora of factors. Each generation of humans have a different preference in beauty, and this isn't limiting to merely the physical appearance of a potential significant other. Look at the generational gap as to what constitutes "beautiful" music or art, in general. There are similarities between the old and the new, there is still an appreciation for the older, dated, view of "beauty", there's a slightly different twist on how one should perceive it.

Then there's the view of self. The self is a manifestation of the expectations of your environment and outside factors that influence what you believe the self should be - which often coincides with the perception. Whether the individual has too little to too much weight (from their own perspective) can often lead to a negative impact on their self-image. The image consists of what you expect versus what you are (as a person). To go against either of these things causes a bit of a disconnect, and often the reason for depression amongst those who are most vulnerable as their self-image hasn't been fully "realized" (teenagers/young adults).

You're right, mxdan. Beauty is complex. Preference is based on a number of factors and there is never a universal preference. Society has caused a greater divide in preference due to multiple factors: race, gender, sexuality, appearance, and so on. As society feeds us the expectation (the norm) and we digest it based on our own preference (or lack thereof) the visualization of beauty is manipulated. I'd argue that it isn't just a genetic whisper - as that whisper gets filtered through own custom-made rose-tinted glasses that were constructed based off of our environment, our self (and its image), and all the other factors that act as filters to create a preference.

In the end, there's beauty all around you and within you. Perhaps you may not see it under your own custom glasses but another person can come along and see the same object or person with awe. Inner beauty is the self-image that is built upon our personality, our preference, and our capacity to understand - which some may find repulsive and others may find beautiful. There isn't a universal "yes" or "no" when it comes to beauty. There is just what you can and cannot see.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone has a type. I love brunettes, blue or green eyes.

To be honest, it doesn't really matter one bit. Even if you are, by societies standard, ugly, then what's the worst that happens? No girl bats an eye to you? But you wanna know how they will? If you instead take that negative energy and make it into something. Make yourself something someone with looks can't beat: personality. That's truly beautiful. Cos when someone see's you for you, they will notice everything beautiful about you.

Beauty isn't complex, it's very simple.
You'll know it when you see it.

It's in the eye of the beholder.

I like the Lexus LFA but apparently the people that ran Lexus think porch screens look good on the front of their cars.
