I'm hesitant to agree with you OP, because you made your rather trolly account in 2010. And that was actually the start of a pretty awesome era for the site. I had nothing but goodwill for the company until 2014 or so (which may or may not coincide with a certain billionaire buying them out ).

Back before they sold the site to some other company, they used to do nice holiday deals on memberships. $39.99 for one-year premium Anime+Drama membership (back then this meant EVERYTHING). They also did several contests where you could win 3, 6, or 12 month memberships. Now it is all facebook or twitter crap.

hmm- let me know if you have found appreciation? i'm just here to pass time and watch some anime.

Well, regarding the trip to Japan, it was meant to promote the site, not cater to long-time members. Granted, I was annoyed when I first learned of the contest, but the target audience makes sense, in hindsight. That said; it does indicate that CR, business-wise, prefers to emphasize attention towards newcomers, and may have little interest in keeping long-term users around. I didn't join CR with the expectation of contests or anything, though, and I still don't.

The really, really stupid thing about that Japan contest in question was that they chose to advertise it here on the forums where the vast majority of people who read the announcement were completely ineligible for it.

If u want to "win trip to Japan", save up $4K. Then u can give ur own trip.

I am thinking should make a "self-help" guide as to such, been there lots. We shall see.

Just so you know, this is virtually impossible for a legal site.

you'd think after 2 pages of replies you'd get more than one answer lol, but i guess that's cause they don't actually do anything

Naw, not really. More of a matter of CR willing to buy worldwide rights to everything. But that is unlike to occur, until they aggressively push market expansion of the platform..

However, some titles are already unlocked (non-east asia), though...

which is a shame, i don't really know how the licensing and that works but i bet that accessibility across all regions should be more profitable overall, for all parts involved. I guess some countries won't permit certain shows and that would pose a problem?

As title suggests I'm seriously wondering. I think i've been with crunchyroll for 5-7 years now and I don't remember anything where they have done something to appreciate my membership.

A while ago, they also did a promotion for people to win a trip to Japan if they weren't subscribed - and this was a huge slap to the face for long-time customers. So; Have they or will they do anything to appreciate their customers? I'm on the verge of cancelling my membership at this point.

never got a thing, but never asked for anything as well. ( I was a paying member for a few years, but to me it was just not worth it anymore. After all I don't watch anime on Crunchyroll since 2011.

They do, at least in conventions. In AX, they gave out a bunch of merchandise to premium members. The most notable are those giant bags. In other smaller conventions, they've had panels with giveaways (merchandise/free monthly subscriptions/etc) for answering questions. Though that one isn't limited by membership.

To be honest, outside of getting more and more shows - probably not.

At conventions they do give free premium and usually a special goody for question 5 or so? That is nice. They are a business though, I understand businesses want money?

Well, from my understanding, the problem is first of all paying for the rights in every country and going through multiple different licencors for one show. This is often not economically feasible on top of being more time and resources taken from the company. However, the real confounding factor is that licencors hold the licence in certain regions and in many regions, there may be no one who holds the licence. That means there is currently no one who has the means to legally distribute the show in that region, so even if Crunchy was willing to put the time and money into getting a show in every region where it is available, they are still restricted by who has shows where.

It is a shame, but you really cant hold it against them. At the end of the day, Crunchy's costs are passed down to the consumer. Either they can pay for every show that is licensed in Uganda and raise premium costs to pay for it or they can pay for shows that will pay for themselves and keep costs down and most consumers happy. Sure, the Ugandan consumers will be upset, but thats business.
