Yes, I need to do that some time. IDK, going solo to any spa/special Japanese inn doesn't feel right. Makes u even more lonely, I suppose. But no matter...

BTW, if you ("Peoples of the Internet") ever go to Japan, (tourist visa only) the JR Pass is mandatory. Saved literally thousands of dollars abusing the **** out of the Shinkansen on 3-week pass. Lets u never have to worry about getting around again, for the most part.

If, however u plan to not go anywhere (like stay Tokyo), then don't do it. Just buy 1-day Tokyo Wide passes, either JR, Subway, or both. And if ur a "criminal", there are ways to game system so u don't pay much of anything...

I actually prefer private onsen tbh. I don't mind being nude in public onsen/baths and so far my tattoos have not posed any problems. I spoke with someone about it and I was told that in recent years, attitudes towards tattoos have changed a lot even in those small towns outside of Tokyo/Kyoto metro areas. But yeah..my fiance and I enjoy the privacy and space to relax by ourselves.

I think for a first time visitor, a 1-week pass would be sufficient if planned out nicely. Like, go to all the Tokyo (and nearby) areas only for 1 week, then visit spots in Kyoto, Nagano, Osaka, Sendai, etc. after. It'll save you a few hundred dollars in the end. Also, certain places require early reservation or tickets through agencies like JTB. I bought our Ghibli Museum via JTB but if you missed out (they sell out fast), there are services that offer passes from Lawson (convenience store) for around 5x the price.

Oh, and POCKET Wi-Fi! I cannot stress enough how useful this is if you don't have international roaming/internet service on your phone. Renting an unlimited pocket wi-fi for more than 2 weeks cost around $120 and it's worth every penny.

.......

Can the world just unplug while on vacation for once? Do u reaaly need constant Internet access? If u really need it, just use hotel wifi, McDonalds/Starbucks or something. I never had a smartphone in Japan until 2016, and did "just fine"......

I used it mainly for Googling locations of places, any interesting events in the area, the shinkansen schedule, bus routes, etc. Uploading photos and videos too and reddit is a must when using the toilet.

That would be immediate family members and close friends. I like to keep my circle small.

It's actually more for myself and my fiance. I don't have my camera out all the time like a lot of tourists though since it's more fun to experience it for yourself. Take a few pictures, put away the phone/camera, enjoy the experience.

Had the opportunity to go to Japan in August / September 2016. I went to Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. Would I go back? Heck yes. If I was fluent in the language I'd totally consider moving there.

If possible, sure

Except I don't speak Japanese

I don't speak Japanese either (just picked up a few words here and there from watching anime lol) but didn't find it difficult at all when I was there last summer. There's a fair amount of Japanese folks who can speak at least a bit of English so ordering things, etc. or finding places isn't difficult.

Really? I'm the only one who's voted, "No"? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

Been there twice and am going back again in nid-November this year. I actually loved it, Kyoto especially, even more than I thought I would. That said, if you're all about anime and nothing else I'm not sure a trip would be worth it, or at least one longer than maybe a week at most.

It does help to at least be familiar with the basics of the language and the culture/customs but if you're not leaving the major tourist centres you'll get along fine.

The costs while certainly more expensive than travel to some places can actually be controlled pretty easily. You just need a good plan and you need to take advantage of things like hostels and cheaper places to eat (which there are a ton of). Also, depending on when you go, you don't even have to pay all that much in airfare either.

I've always really wanted to go. My mother and I are planning to go over there for the 2020 Olympics. The best part is I don't need a visa if I'm not going to be there for more than 90 days.

To anyone planning to go there. I'd suggest checking out AirBNB listings. Stayed in some very nice places before for a fraction of what a small hotel room would cost. A studio apartment with kitchen, living room, washroom, balcony and a great view in Tokyo runs for around $70~$120/night whereas a small hotel room with a single bed and no/crap view would run for around $250~$400/night. One with a king size and a nice view would probably be around $300~$800/night.

BTW, to "Peoples of the Internet" out there, roomsharing services like AirBNB are still illegal in Japan. Violate Hotel/Occupancy laws, some city laws. So less u like being Mexican, would advised against. Although current government under PM Abe has been "overlooking" such matters...

Lol, ur hotel room rates. If you want to go to Japan, spend no more then $40-70 USD/night on a quality, small-scale "Courtyard/Marriott style" room, look no further....

https://www.toyoko-inn.com/eng/

A girl-owned/operated hotel franchise, all over the place (largest in Japan), easy English website (even tells u how many rooms left); "super clean-freaks" (so no ****rooms), free "breakfast" (coffee worth enough), discount cards for easy checkin, some other stuff.

The last hotel u ever need in Japan. If u just need a place to sleep, that is. Only problem is, they speak like 0 English. Which is fine long as u don't have problems/want to check out sooner. Else, u need to learn some basics.

Indeed, bet ur noob tour guide book didn't tell u that. U can spend whole month in hotels in japan for under $1500-$2000. I did that last year, went to all 4 islands. Is good...
