I want to go to Japan very much, but sadly for me I have a rather large back tattoo... Most onsens have rather strict rules about tattoos. A lot of water parks as well. Heck, even some beaches are off limits to me now. With the Olympics coming back to Japan in 2020(?) there is a lot of talk about tattoo acceptance but the Japanese people are very traditional. There have even been cities that have raided and shut down tattoo parlors. So as much as I want to go, until the stigma of tattoos is eased, I don't see it happening. Which makes me sad.

That is some nice work! Could you just not go to places that require you to take your shirt off? Or just research before hand which places accept tattoos?

I have a large tattoo on my upper right arm and have never had any issues even if it does mean most onsens are out of the question.

Such obvious solution, modify urs (if technically able) to something "Japan Approved'. Then it shall be so...

It's a grey legal area. The hotel rates depends on the season. Around the last time I was there, those were the nightly prices.
A lot of AirBnB listings are owned by individuals who purchase multiple properties and rent them out so you won't be sharing the apartment with anyone. I checked the website you linked and the rates are definitely reasonable but I'd still stick to staying in an apartment with more space, amenities, and a better view. In most cases, you have zero interation with the host except if you have questions via DM/e-mail.

I have multiple tattoos across my arms and it was never an issue. Went to a ryokan and some public onsen with no issues. I asked one of the hosts before going, of course, and I was told it's not really an issue anymore in most places. The stigma still exists, somewhat, but not as widespread as one might think. Hell, I even got a medium/slightly large piece in Shibuya a week before going. You'll be fine if that's your only concern. I went to Ghibli Museum in Mitaka and one of the hosts wanted to see my Mononoke tattoo up close and we had a short conversation about our favorite Ghibli films. She thought I was some kind of an artist in NY and was surprised to find out that I work in healthcare so there's still that slight prejudice (well, not in a negative way) about tattooed individuals.

Also, sick Pink Floyd tattoo.

Yes, I really want to go there. The place is just so interesting and fascinating . I love the culture, the temples, the food, the people.
They have a great balance between the traditional and modern things in all walks of life and have so many cool things on offer.

Everyone I have seen that has gone to Japan has absolutely LOVED it.

I really hope I can go someday.

Since ur from Aussie and under 30, u can get a "Working Holiday" visa. Lets u stay there for awhile + job permission. Very priceless thing, I wish USA had that.

Good way for people to do long-term (months) living in Japan. For the Hard Core, of course...

I'd visit but I wouldn't move there, I see myself in England forever. I'd be screwed, I don't know Japanese. Or any other language, for that matter.
