that is, despite your fears, stand your ground and defend or fight for what your believe is right.

expanding on my previous post / quote:
courage is the following in my book:

1. have something you deeply care about. this could be a political ideology, fighting for freedom in a dicatorship, for example. or something more mundane.

2. understand that in order to act on it, you will make sacrifices. you or someone you love could lose their life, or you could lose your dignity and reputation in the process. either way, you'd lose something that matters to you a lot on a very deep, personal level.

3. understand that there's tremendous risk of failure. someone acting on something with 90% chance of success is not being courageous.

4. despite the risks and sacrifices (as in 2 and 3 above), be willing to stand up and fight for what you believe is right
