These shows tend to be aimed at older single men who have lots of disposable income to buy figures of cute characters and boxed sets and much of them are based on visual novels aimed at the same audience that include explicit sex scenes. They more or less prey on loneliness by creating surrogate girlfriends and children for them to fantasise about which they'll likely never have. It's mostly just low effort high profit stuff but there are good shows in high schools just not that many because generic magical girl and nerdy loser who somehow becomes a sex god and has a harem sells easy.

Probably for the same reason there are tons of shit reality shows on American tv. They're popular and make money.

A lot of anime is targeted to Japanese otaku who dump $300-400 dollars on box sets and more for related merchandise on such shows. Minimal effort, maximum profit, from a business standpoint not much of a reason to break from the cycle.

There are plenty of good high school anime, but I know the type you are talking about. Cookie cutter dense male lead in harem with 3 or 4 generic arch types vying for his attention. You watch 2 or 3 of those shows, you have essentially seen them all.

This post sums it all up.

While the proliferation of anime with the high school setting is true, to call them all shit is a major generalisation. I have seen more good anime that happen to be set in a high school than I can count off the top of my head, and to be quite honest, there are also a lot of anime set around high school students in which the high school itself is barely a factor in the story. If you just instinctively reject every show with this setting then you are unfortunately missing out on a lot of grade A material.

Maybe Japan is running out of ideas or Japanese people just have very bizarre taste in animation.

If by highschool anime we are talking about the ones described in the bold text above (aka generic highschool harem) then it really is just sexual fantasy pandering but if we are talking about ANY anime featuring a cast in highschool or of highschool age then that is such a stupidly huge generalisation I don't even.

Compare Undefeated Bahamut to Hanasaku Iroha; both "highschool anime" but I think we'll all agree there is vast difference in quality.

I sympathize with the OP, the amount of absolute shit high school anime and similar garbage are a cancer and have pretty much taken over. It's basically shoved right in your face, I can't fathom how much of a loser you have to be to watch that crap. Every year there is less and less high quality AAA anime titles.

If you don't like it don't watch it. It's very simple. And calling somebody you disagree with a loser is more an indication of YOUR maturity. But my opinion and $10 will get me a coffee at Starbucks.

I don't usually watch as many high school themed shows as I did when I was younger, I am watching Fuuka right now and it is not so bad.
