Yes, seems real. Teaser at end of the movie. Indeed, this franchise is powerhouse.

Thanks for news... Today lots of "secrets of the universe" are revealed at last, it is so...

"has been all but confirmed" seems to be overstating it, and your original title for this thread was misleading. I've changed it.

A "tease" is not all but confirmed, and even in that entry it says:

Please keep in mind: This is NOT yet a hard confirmation or announcement. There is no release date, and we don't know if Alicization will become a new season, or another movie project. But we are now certain that it is in the making.

(emphasis mine)

BTW, your original post, being just a link, was against forum guidelines, which require actually indicating what's in a link and providing a brief bit of one's own contribution beyond the link when starting a thread that's centered around the content of a link. You did add that info in your second post (which I've merged with your first now--in the future, please use the "Edit" link to add something to an existing post rather than making two in a row), but please keep this in mind for the future.

Given how long the next arc is, I wasn't so sure if it was going to happen seeing that it will take at least a year's worth of episodes to complete. Nevertheless, until an official confirmation is made I'm taking this with a grain of salt.

It was confirmed the second they made a second season...obviously with a wildly successful series they would continue into the next arc which is a much longer one then the previous ones.

It actually has been confirmed

I mean, while it is virtually certain that this pertains to another season, "SAO will return" does not mean "Season three confirmed". For all we know it could return in the form of pachinko machines.

One can only assume that "SAO will return" means Season 3.

Season 3? I doubt it'll be released and all I know is that the movie is about released in Japan.

Hopefully they can shorten it to a cour or two.

Probably because of the reviews season 2 got.

I don't really get this point of view. Regardless of the reviews, all the evidence suggests that Sword Art Online is still a highly profitable property - Ordinal Scale seems to be doing decent numbers so far, there's a ton of merchandising and a live-action project. Even if it isn't critically acclaimed I can definitely see a strong, near certain, probability of at least one further anime season, particularly as there is a huge amount of source material available.

I'm not saying reviews don't matter (although it would be interesting to gather evidence on the extent to which different types of reviews actually influence profitability and popularity), but if they were so influential you would think Ordinal Scale etc wouldn't exist. (As an aside I have no idea how SAO reviewed in Japan which may have some impact).

Generally, reviews have limited importance unless they affect sales. If good reviews equal more sales, then a company will want good reviews, but SAO seems to sell well regardless of the hate machine that's grown around it and clearly it has spawned a merchandising empire with the anime actually being profitable (which is rare) from what I've read in the past.

That being said, I haven't read the reviews in question. I'm no expert. I am but a humble fellow anime fan and one who very much enjoyed season 2 of SAO. (GGO and Sinon were so much fun and Yuki ripped my heartstrings out).

I'd point to Oridinal Scale's current success as further proof that SAO is likely to stick around for a while.
