Are there any yuri series with a female audience in mind? As in, limited "fanservice" and more focusing on fleshed-out relationships between women?

Sweet Blue Flowers is definitely really good.

There don't really seem to be very many anime that fit the bill here. Thankfully the manga world is a little better.

I have that in my queue and watched an episode or two and found it boring. But maybe I'll restart it again!

Oh, and what manga series fit the parameters?

Have you watched Sakura Trick? Not sure if it's made with "a female audience in mind" but I thought it was really sweet and every episode enjoyable (much more upbeat than Sweet Blue Flowers). Instead of being overly serious, it has a nice slice-of-life feel to it. I also thought it portrayed an adolescent relationship quite well (trying to sort out their own feelings and how confusing that can be for young people).

It does seem like a lot of yuri stories do go for a slow burn type of story. There's a long build up and then, sadly, not a lot of conclusion.

Right now I'm reading:
Citrus - I love this series so much and can't wait for the anime version coming this year
Bloom Into You
Kiss and a White Lily
Pulse - Amazing series that is actually pretty fast moving for a yuri series. It does have some explicit love scenes though so it may or may not be something you'd enjoy
Lily Love - By the same writer as Pulse and nearly as good but a more traditional yuri story
Fluttering Feelings - Really good but also really really long and slow, and the writer is on hiatus due to serious health issues so it may never even get finished, but still maybe worth a read

Octave and Girl Friends are also pretty good.

I know there are more but those are the ones in my head at the moment.

Sakura Trick looks GREAT! I added it. I'll keep an eye out for Citrus when the series appears, or maybe try to read it now if it's published en ingles.

Hope I don't get banned or whatever, but porn genres are analogous to what I mean by anime/manga for the female gaze. "standard" lesbian porn is a lecherous, wretched male fantasy. The women perform fluffed-up sexuality for the male viewer, or may even be in a threesome that centers around the almighty male and his orgasm.

However, good faith lesbian porn will be made... for the pleasure of all. The activity will be less cartoonish and exploitative; it will show two women embracing each other for... themselves, and a female viewer in a horizontal sense.

So that's what I'm going for... I'm not some creeper looking for Yuri because "omg hot girls fanservice omg." I want some that shows the women involved as full people in a loving, egalitarian relationship (sexual, romantic, or both).

... Snippity...

I know exactly what you mean, and that's a lot like what I look for as well. In fact, that's actually one of the reasons why I like yuri media in general. There tends to be a greater focus on actual characters and relationships, with the romance and possible sex having legitimate context, as opposed to what you see in many other anime/manga.

Anywho, Sakura Trick is definitely fun in a largely light and fluffy way.

Citrus has been published in English in, I believe, 5 collected volumes so far. The Japanese version is still ongoing in the Yuri Hime manga compilation which is released monthly with a 6th collected volume to be released this year.

There are a few not on here that stand out ...

Destiny of a Shrine Maiden
Candy Boy
Blue Drop
Maria Watches Over Them
YuriKuma Arashi

On here beside Sakura Trick and Sweet Blue Flowers (which are two of the best) you may also like Kanamemo. There's a young couple in the ensemble cast that takes center stage for a few episodes. It's hard not to fall in love with them as characters.

I recommend manga from Comic Yuri Hime or manga that is written by female author. There's also shojo or josei manga with yuri element.

If you like non-moe art and/or yuri featuring adult women then try:
Collectors and Tonari no Robot by Nishi Uko
Free Soul by Yamaji Ebine
Our Journey to Lesbian Motherhood by Higashi Koyuki, Masuhara Hiroko, and Sugiyama Emiko
Honey & Honey by Takeuchi Sachiko
