Japan’s largest housing website to offer LGBT support in finding tolerant landlords
Posted 2/19/17 , edited 6/28/17

Suumo is a national housing information website, compiling a vast database of available properties for sale or rent as well as providing advice and other support for buyers. Their presence in Japan is huge to say the least, with physical service counters in various locations and commercials that run around the clock.

Starting next month, they plan to expand even further by offering a search aimed at members of the LGBT community, including cohabiting same-sex couples, all over Japan. Suumo will begin a registry for landowners to specifiy that they are tolerant of LGBT lifestyles and allow tenants to live openly.

I'm sad there is even a need for this but good job Suumo!

I pretty much 100% agree with OP's statements but yeah. Housing discrimination has historically been a big issue even here, so imagine how bad it must be in a country where you don't have many options other than an appartment. Good on Suumo.

Japan is much more conservative, so I'm glad he's doing this so LGBT folks don't feel threated or unwelcome for their sexuality or gender expression.

Yeah, it is needed. Safe spaces are a must for the entire LGBT community across the world.

yay! so glad to see this. Is Japan really as homophobic as some think? Their approval rating for marriage equality is about the same as the US, and hate crimes are virtually unheard of.

Violence and legal restrictions are not always indicative of how shitty a population's views will be on a group. About an hour north of my city is the town of Ste. Agathe, Manitoba which is probably the most openly homophobic shithole I've ever set foot in. They will not commit crimes against the lgbt people but they will sure as shit judge any gay citizen or visitor to the point of demonization. I'm sure Japan is not nearly that bad though. It's probably not fantastic judging by the fact that this needs to be a thing, but nothing in the research I did on the subject once suggested they were anywhere near as bad as, say, Russia or India.

This is great news, though I did not imagine it would be necessary. I do not know much of how Japanese view sexuality and anime is not an accurate lens to investigate.

In any case, I do give a thumbs up.

And yet LGBT people are on the whole treated far better in Japan then the USA for example. Conservative they may be but at least the Japanese aren't raving lunatics like the anit-LGBT folk in North America.
