But what is the difference between an OVA and a OAD?

they seem to be the same thing

I think it is just another way of phrasing it to avoid confusion. Both are anime released straight to video without being aired on television first. However, since Japan uses "AV" for Adult Videos, "OAV" might inadvertently be giving off the wrong impression. OAD is the same thing, just without the possible pornography connotation.

Other than connotations, OVA are 'straight to video' in the sense of 'oh, you enjoyed this series? Here's one or two episodes we aren't going to air on TV where you can get all the T and A you can handle! Hanamaru Kindergarden First Class! Only $100 dollars a tape!'

Though today it's all BluRay, I understand.

OAD refers to an OVA that is bundled with a manga or other publication, where as a "standard" OVA is offered for sale separately. That is one reason we sometimes see OVA's bundled with a series box set here in the west or offered for sale separately, but rarely see OAD's available via legal channels.
