A quick summary of how I generally categorize "magitech" stories, which contain both magic and technology.

I place them on a continuum, with magic on one end and technology on the other.

Much of the main comparisons I draw are similar to how sorcery is distinguished from wizardry- That is, the reliance on unlearned innate factors versus knowledge and technique / technology.

Three loose categories emerge based on the above criteria, with examples:

Magical Technology - mostly magic
Pervasive magic with technology mostly limited to form- Functional opacity almost complete.

Magic Knight Rayearth - Mashins (ma: magical, shin: god. "Mashin" a transliteration word play on "machine"), giant suits/mecha of deity-like magical armor transformed from sacred beasts

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha - Magical wand weapons with "firing modes"

Median Magitech - a balance between mysticism and technology
Limited mechanical enumeration, magical sources mostly of "excavated lost world" variety, often mated with steampunk

Vision of Escaflowne - mecha and aerial ships with magical crystal power source

Simoun - Aerial fighters with mysterious power source with aerial magical glyph attacks (This series contains many interesting concepts which makes it a standout among yuri titles- highly recommended)

Technological Magic - mostly technology
Mechanical functionality mostly enumerated, opaque elements limited to magic.

Break Blade- Engineering revolved around harnessing magical manipulation of crystals (borderline case)

The Irregular at Magic High School - Engineering of weapons harnessing users' magical powers

Superpowers and special "ESP" powers may be excluded from this system. The Asterisk War should be excluded, for its reference isn't to magic.

Elements can crossover, and there aren't clear cut rules regarding categories. This should provide a starting point for discussion.
