It's good to see judges coming down on backwards thinking like this.

Just goes to show you can't hide behind the First Amendment every time.

A Georgia couple was sentenced to years in prison Monday for shouting racial slurs and threatening black adults and children at a child’s birthday party in 2015, prosecutors said.

Georgia Superior Court Judge William McClain sentenced Jose Torres, 26, and Kayla Norton, 25, to 20 years and 15 years in prison, respectively. During Monday’s sentencing, the judge said the couple’s involvement in the July 2015 confrontation was “motivated by racial hatred,” the Associated Press reported.

Driving up on a black kid's birthday party with 5+ trucks waving Confederate flags while yelling racial slurs and brandishing a shotgun.

How exactly did they expect this to pan out?

A very clear conviction right there. For the prosecution, it must have been a...a piece of cake.

At first I thought 15-20 years seemed unusually excessive for what I at first thought was just petty harassment. Then I got to this part, and suddenly it all made a lot more sense.

Torres also threatened to kill the people at the party with a shotgun Norton had loaded and retrieved from his truck, the district attorney’s office said in a statement on Facebook.

To take time out of your day for something so pointless and premeditated... What in the actual fuck is wrong with people?

That seems oddly excessive considering rapists, both attempt and committed, are awarded with prison sentences with even less, with many serving many years under the original conviction. I am disgusted by both acts, but I feel this could have been subject to court of public opinion. Whatever.

It probably didn't help that they were threatening violence against children with guns. That's pretty well frowned upon, legally speaking at least.

I am aware of that, but rape is a crime that requires an especially callous and depraved individual, with sentences, when they are doled out, are less then ten years. In any case, I am not sure 15-20 years is appropriate for what has happened, though what they were legally charged with does seem fairly serious. Terrorist like threats, for one.

That rapists are convicted too infrequently or sentenced too lightly does not detract at all from what happened here. That's a separate issue.
