It does depend on the author, some are good at writing stand alones or stories that can stand on their own even though they are part of "series". Hillerman, Saberhagen, Heinlein were very good at writing stories that could be read as part of a "series" or a "world" or just as singular stories. If I'm reading history, I prefer a one volume covering some particular issue/time/event. Then some stories require more than a single volume, as was mentioned above, Harry Potter, or the Lord of the Rings.

I don't think it'd be possible to make a series out of something like Les Misérables, so no. Then again, Foucault's The History of Sexuality was part of a series of three works.

I actually very much enjoy anthologies of short stories. Those of Flannery O'Connor and H.P. Lovecraft are my favorite. Short story collections can do something different: attack similar themes in various settings. I suggest reading some O'Connor stories - "Good Country People" and "The River", in particular. One of my friends once described reading her writing as like drinking straight absinthe and then walking through traffic.

Standalone, it's easier on my wallet than a series.

I prefer a series of books over standalone books. More world-building.

'Its a matter of content. Books like Conan the Barbarian series, Dragons Lance series , Brain ships series, and Accorna's series are good series so I read the hell out of them. But book Series like Harry Potter, and twilight can go and burn in some deep dark pit. (they Suck)

Same for stand alones... some are good and some are crap. it is all about the content.

It is the same as my cartoon watching.. we have Japanimation, he have American animation, and we have ova's what is important is the content, not whether it is a stand alone of a series, or where it is from.

Both, sometimes you just want to read one novel other times a series looks great. You just have to be in the mood to put up with some repetitiveness. You also have to know when to stop if a series isn't going the way you like or you find it's no longer worth it getting the latest book. I'd rather deal with a duology or trilogy than have over 10 books of poor content.

Both. But if I were to read a book series, I want to make sure all books are out first before starting. I don't want to wait especially if there's a cliffhanger

I like series, they allow for the story to go on for longer (or for multiple stories to be told with the same characters or in the same world).

Also it means more books to read \o
