How in the heck does this happen at a zoo? In Paris of all places! Don't they have strict gun control?

This is thought to be the first time in Europe a live animal living in captivity has been killed by poachers.

wtf...

i mean, we live in an age where there is so much terrorist media that it desensitizes someone into not caring if it is on the other side of the country. But some asshole got creative, did a shit thing NO ONE expected, and suddenly I care for that poor rhino. 8I

ISIS, if your reading this, this is how you shock people. People care more about animals then other people:P

also, are the few left in the wild so well guarded that the city zoo ones are actually easier? or are there just so few left in the wild?

last, but not least, wtf...

I'm not surprised someone would try this, honestly. With rhinos becoming more and more scarce in their natural habitats, the force of those defending them has increased dramatically so we may actually be at a point where you're less likely to get caught or killed by poaching in a zoo. Plus it's not like poachers have actual morals so why wouldn't they try it?

No, there are still more in the wild than in captivity.
Seems like an experienced poacher spotted an opportunity.
Really odd they aren't releasing CCTV footage.

Probably people who've done it before, though maybe not in a zoo.

tbh I think running around with a gun in Paris is much more likely to get you shot quicker than running around with a gun in the bush in Africa. Terror fears and all that.

Could we maybe like, as a species, agree that grinding up pieces of exotic animals is not going to make our penises harder?

I mean, it seems to me a completely irrational amount of animals die each year in the pursuit of dick enhancement.

How many species have been rendered extinct or forced onto the endangered list by traditional Chinese "medicine"? ><

Wait, that's why rhino horns are hunted? I mean I expected very little sense to be behind the motivations to pull this kind of shit but wanting to use it for rich douchebag viagra is on a whole other level. I mean, with shark finned soup the fin actually brings a unique flavour. It's still a beyond idiotic thing to do but at least it gets a result you couldn't get at your local grocery store pharmacy.

That is the gist of it. A market based on superstitious medicines for backaches and increased bloodflow (to the penis), and as a sign of being wealthy. You may think it is rural areas, but no, the influx of wealthy Chinese in particular is fueling this. There are other, predominantly Asian countries with just as evident superstitions, but China is far more notable in this regard.

I realized the demand for a lot of poaching came from Asia, I just never realized it could be for such a retarded reason.

There is no scientific basis for any of this. In any case, at least with big game hunting you are paying to kill the animals, which greatly helps the infrastructure of modern Africa. This is just needless upsetting of the environment, and amounts to a lucrative but petty robbery of both the locals and the animals themselves, the former of money and resources to maintain the grounds, and the animals their lives.

In any case, it is bad enough that poachers will be killed on site in most African Countries with hunting reserves.

Most advocacy groups believe that killing should be a last resort. After all, one arrest means more arrests. I cannot say I disagree with this, but I also believe that as far spread as wildlife patrols go, a weapon does seem like a good idea.

Honestly if to comes down to either killing the poacher or letting the poacher kill his prey, kill the fucking poacher. There will be countless more like him that won't be the least bit deterred if there is no threat to their personal safety in it, meanwhile there is a very limited number of whatever they're hunting left.

It should be noted that the Poachers WILL be armed and probably just as likely to fire at the guards are they are the rhino. After all it's hard to get the horns with the Guards knowing where you will be going.

And Big game hunting is used as a way to control the animal population in most areas and in some rarer cases to take out a very dangerous animal.
