I would never consider becoming a religious Buddhist, but it can be said that I'm something of one philosophically. In my opinion, its greatest teaching is that attachments lead to suffering.

great thread on buddhism.

Its a great philosphy!

here's the four noble truth (the basics of buddhism)
1. life is suffering!
2. desire and ill will are the causes of suffering
3. there is a path to end suffering
4. the noble eightfold path is the way to end suffering.

Yay, a Buddhism thread.
Well, I am not that well informed about Buddhism, but from what I have heard and seen I can't really criticise it, nor its followers/believers, since I have heard and seen only good things.(Anyways correct me please, if I am saying something incorrect about Buddhism)
- I like the idea that they don't really care if there is a God/gods or not, what is important for them is to live in harmony with yourself and nature. It is really spiritual with all the meditations to find yourself and so on..
- Amazing is also that they don't really try to convert other people to Buddhism, nor are they trying to expand their territory with preaching about their religion and trying to convince the others. Which makes it to be quite a peaceful and tolerant religion. Well at least I have never heard that Buddhists would make a war for their religion or kill others in the name of their religion...
- Another thing that is interesting is that it teaches you to respect nature and its beings. Plant a tree, don't kill an animal, it could be someone you have known in your last life, this actually leads to vegetarianism, but not many Buddhists are really vegetarians, unless they are monks..
- I know that there are a few derivations of the original concept of Buddhism, such as Zen- Buddhism and ..oh lawdy I forgot it....<.< the Tibetan Buddhistic monks are practicing tantra something...oh lawdy..I can't recall, and I am too lazy to look it up..D:
- Everywhere where Buddhism did go to, it did never really cause a war, and did combine its philosophical morals and teachings with the original traditions of this foreign places/lands..

So far everything seems to be good, and nice. I also understand that they are praising Buddha, but I think that they are somehow exaggerating it with the praising/worshiping of Buddha. I am sure that Siddharta wouldn't have wanted that they would make such a cult about him....I guess people tend to cultism..<.<

Though I regard it more as a life philosophy than a religion. Anyways very peaceful

Flo~

does it really matter? just believe and respect in your own god and u wont go to hell.
but at very least budhism's chanting of sutras can really help warding off evil spirits. lol

On special occasions, we burn money. Not real money, but one with a square in the middle that is god, while the other side of the paper also has a square in the middle is silver. Theres also those long pieces of whitish paper. And then theres money that well, actually looks like money. We fold the money together such as a combination of 1 piece of those papers with squares in the middle, a few long whitish paper, and money.

We have this red coloured metal "pot", it's pretty big and it has a top thingy. My mom would have a lighter and she would light one of the stacks of paper and throw it in, the fire would start burning inside the metal pot. Then we'd slowly put the other combinations of paper inside. I love this part. My dad uses a nearby stick or whatever he can find the sometimes poke at the paper so it'd spread out and burn quicker.

Isn't that more of a Chinese tradition than a Buddhist tradition? This is very often done in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan during the Hungry Ghost Festival to pray to our ancestors, give them money to use in Hell and feed the 'Hungry Ghosts' ._.
