Someone over at r/Anime on Reddit posted this:

Rewrite's new episode has an average bitrate of just ~900kbps, compared to ~3100kbps for ep 21.

They are encoding with an unspecified version of x264 core 142, which means it dates to 2014. They updated from last week, when they were still using core 120 r2120 (released late 2011). Their x264 settings are based on the fast preset, rather than spending extra time to make it look better. In fact they lowered some of their settings in the update: old on top vs new on bottom (don't view in browser, view in editor that preserves whitespace and doesn't wrap lines)

I personally don't see much reason to pay for Crunchyroll if they are going to sell me garbage. People have been asking them for years to increase video quality (old bitrate + settings was insufficient) and now they have done the exact opposite.
I'll probably run my own tests tonight. Interesting if true.

Wow.

I'll be curious to see what your tests end up showing as well. I know there's a lot of fanfare for all of CR's accomplishments this year which takes up a lot of the oxygen whenever Crunchyroll is being discussed, but I truly believe at the same time that customers are getting the worst service in years. And that tidbit has been just kind of brushed under the rug, because you know....1 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS WOOOOOOOOO!

I'm hoping CR addresses these issues promptly. This doesn't make sense if the amount of people subbing to CR are growing but the quality is decreasing when it should increase!

Yep... Sounds like a good idea not to give them my money any time soon.

This appears to be occurring across the board. It's quite noticeable at 1080p.

With any luck it's a problem that will only affect today's broadcasts and will be corrected in the future. Hopefully CR brass chimes in on the matter.

I stopped giving them my money when I was being visited by the ERROR_500 monster almost every day.

Plus I can't use CR in Japan anyways.

I'll wait and see how this pans out, but this is a good enough reason for me to unsubscribe. I prefer supporting the industry when possible, but this is not how to treat your subscribers.

Has anybody thought to post this where the CR brass can see it? I.e. The support forums.

Seriously misread "bitrate" as "birthrate".

Immediate thought was, "Wow, so Crunchyroll actually has actually made that much of a demographic impact by creating virgins?"

I recommend sending letters through support to show them that we care about this
http://www.crunchyroll.com/help?topic=contact

I think this is not acceptable if this claim is true. I pay for quality and have defended CR many times. But I simply can not agree to this

there's so many (better) options to watch anime in Japan that CR should be at the bottom of the list
besides tv or your local rental store, there's
https://abema.tv/now-on-air/midnight-anime
http://gyao.yahoo.co.jp/ct/anime/
http://ch.nicovideo.jp/portal/anime
Line also offers an anime channel i think
and of course, Amazon Japan, which only charges ~$30 usd a year.
(a lot of anime is included as part of the prime package)
