I'd rather wait to see what CR has to say about this before jumping the gun, but they really do need to respond to this.

Apparently their PR guy is over on Reddit claiming that this is all untrue, that people are comparing rips of illegal streams to actual Crunchyroll streams.

he is telling people to not use rips as examples even though the rips are identical to what is on the site. he is not denying that there is a problem

and rips are very clearly not the only things having the issue. they notably reduced the bitrate on everything

I checked and I don't see any record of a mod editing your post. Did you actually see a change, or just the "edited x minutes ago" message?

(Sometimes I see a swath of posts that all have an 'Edited same amount of time" message on them, but where it doesn't appear that either users or mods made an edit, so maybe sometimes there's something that goes on on the backend that results in an edited time stamp showing up.

Ah, okay. Cool deal. I just saw the "edited x minutes ago" and it was during a time when I wasn't here. Didn't know. Thanks.

Has anybody thought to post this where the CR brass can see it? I.e. The support forums.

It seems that CR staff is aware of it:

Hey all, CR staff here - I'm in the mountains right now myself and have not been able to personally replicate this experience, but please send me any and all feedback you have and I'll make sure it's seen internally. We take community feedback very seriously.
Hopefully they'll also reply in their own forums once they've looked into the matter.

This is a major case of overreacting. The only proof thus far is a couple of shots from the OP of the latest episode of Rewrite. In fact, I investigated myself and found no problem from what I noticed. I contacted the customer support chat, being a premium member, and they informed me that any video quality problems would be due to an individual's internet connection.

Even if I overlooked any detail during my Rewrite Episode 22 investigation, it's just one episode. One episode. Let me repeat that. One episode. For a few seconds, might I add.

I checked the new episode of Heybot which has been released since Rewrite, and found absolutely no quality problem.

Now don't jump to conclusions when literally nothing has been confirmed.

i guess you investigated a tad too late. they apparently already fixed the problem.

edit: "just one episode" doesn't cut it when people are paying CR
and if CR didn't know about the issue, the compression problems could end up affecting future episodes as well / possibly other series.

I guess I'll be the outlier and give them the benefit of the doubt for a couple weeks.

Not all show translations here are what I consider great (Gabriel Dropout's translator just makes lines up because he thinks it's funnier) but fansubs are generally barely passable. My brother made me watch some with him, I constantly had to tell him, "That's not quite what they said." I also don't want to risk whatever viruses are on those sites, and don't want to throw the entire industry down the drain by not supporting the major legal site for the West.

Some people seem to be saying if their video quality isn't super HD, they'll steal to still receive questionable quality subs, suffer inconsistent video, spend time ensuring no viruses sneak in through every crack, and sabotage the industry.

Complain if you have concerns, don't always go nuclear.

Thereby proving my point further.

CR: Extensive library of anime streaming legally in HD without ads for only $6.95/mo!!
Everyone: Yeah, sign me up!!
*4 seconds of an episode of Rewrite slightly drops in quality for 3 hours*
Everyone: WTF HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO YOUR SUBSCRIBERS ILLEGAL SITES ARE BETTER I'M UNSUBSCRIBING TO SHOW MY ANGER.

Yeah, I think it's an overreaction as well. Either way, CR is looking into it. I don't think this is the equivalent of the Watergate tapes. Probably a technical glitch, if anything, unless people can prove the problem exists on multiple shows.

This is someone trying to start a bs rumor in order to scrape up any smallest justification for streaming anime illegally.

there's zero reason to try and make a justification for piracy. people who don't want to pay and would rather sail the high seas already do so.

edit:
either a pirate or a premium user noticed the drop in quality, took a screenshots. other premium users noticed the drop in quality caused by some glitch. CR took notice and fixed it. there's no conspiracy here. real life isn't that exciting.

That's your opinion. You would be surprised.

The original Reddit user who brought attention to the situation claimed "CR has reduced bitrate by 40-70%" to "save money."
Explain.

clearly he was upset and was overreacting, as was already suggested. people aren't necessarily logical when they're upset.

We also should take into account that Reddit is infested with a toxic community. Even though I think it is someone overreacting it did concern a little when it was brought up. I'm just glad that CR responded quickly and I guess fixed the problem. I have a feeling these guys were hoping that CR wouldn't fix the problem so they can look like some heroes.
