I bought a TCL Roku TV awhile back and the apps just crazy slow to load on it, everything else loads in seconds flat, my internet connection speed is great with a gaming router that'll handle as many devices as I can throw at it and yet Crunchyroll is still just crazy slow to load, once it loads the videos (usually but not always) load in seconds and run fine without buffering, so is this an issue on my end or the apps?

You're not going to get an official answer to this from CR, (business practice secrets after all), but as the owner of an Insignia Roku TV who goes through the same issue, I'll offer for what seems (to me) to be a reasonable explanation...

CR's catalog is over 800 Anime shows (ignoring Drama for now, since I haven't counted the number of those), each needing a title, description blurb, picture icon, etc

The app has several pre-sorted ways to list those, which constitute a lot of data and memory to download and organize: Popular, Recent, Alphabetical, etc, including your queue and watch history.

If you compare CR to something like Amazon or Netflix, CR never seems to have any pauses to display the next set of off-screen icons, as opposed to Amazon and Netflix which both have notable pauses to gather the next set of images, especially noticeable when you scroll rapidly.

So this seems to indicate that CR is pre-loading all that information, or at least a large proportion of it, up-front rather than retrieving it as needed, thus the big initial wait.

I especially noticed this behavior, having an Amazon Fire Stick. The CR app on there, loads initially with quite a bit less time, but when you try to scroll through the list alphabetically, it has the same wait to display the next images.

So there is a trade off going on there, the more you load up front, the less it lags scrolling shows, because multiple subsequent retrievals would have to make new server requests, but data loaded locally just has to be retrieved from memory.

We notice the difference more on the Roku TV models, because those are equivalent to Roku Stick technology, which have smaller processors, vs a Roku 3 or 4 which would be somewhat faster handling menu operations.

At least, that's how I see it. I may be completely wrong. It's just a guess based on seeing how things might occur from a programmer's perspective...

Also of note, this is Saturday night, when, of late, the site has been less responsive than at other times. There have been quite a few ddos attacks which may still be on-going, calculated to hit and make CR look bad at the worst viewing time, when a couple of really popular shows release. Also, the popularity of those shows may also contribute, too. From our single user's perspective, there's no way to differentiate between those, and it may be just one, or the other, or a combination of both.

It happens on my roku 4 as well so it's not just TV's, it's started within the past week or two. Once it's loaded I have 0 issue with streaming, buf the initial loading takes up to 5 minutes.

I have a Roku 2 and for a while Crunchyroll and animes loaded and played just fine. But this past week every anime has been stopping and reloading over and over. Why the hell did Crunchyroll have to break something that was working?

For some reason, my Roku 3 works great almost all the time.

I only have problems when the CR site is suffering attacks or they're degrading video on fly. Otherwise, the app and videos load just fine. Even when I was a subscriber, HD video played without many problems at 720 & 1080.

My Roku 3 isn't perfect, but I'd say up time and reliability for the CR Roku App is over 90%. It's possible my next door neighbor is running a Crunchyroll server farm because, as I say, I rarely have problems with my Roku or iOS CR app for that matter.

TCL Roku TV, crunchyroll starts fine but refuses to play any of the recent episodes for releases and I don't have a flippin clue why, it plays old anime episodes just fine.

I KNOW! I was able to play an episode of HunterxHunter just fine yesterday. But I can't play the newer episodes or just-released episodes in my queue at all. They run for a second and then reload, reload, reload.

And while all this crap is going on, Crunchyroll happily takes our money and does nothing. Nice.

Had the opposite issue with my Roku 1, until I just checked it again today. I could watch new releases but not older episodes. Today I can watch neither through my Roku. It's probably an issue related to the recent encoding debacle. I assume that since I lost the ability to watch the older episodes at the beginning of the year, that this is when they started changing their library encoding scheme with no update to the Roku 1 app. I understand that it is an older piece of hardware that is not being supported, but I find it odd that it is having issues that match the time-lines with the encoding issues. I may just be the canary in the coal mine, to be able to see these issues pop up as they are changing things away from the older software support. Yes, I contacted support on the issue and still have not received a reply.

Over the past week or so episodes have been having issues with playing. App has been loading slower for a while now. But now videos won't play for more than a few seconds to minute if I'm lucky and they have to reload. Highly annoying.

I am having similar problem with my Sharp Roku TV. Everything seems to work OK except for last episode (11) of yowamushi pedel. It says loading, progress bar reaches end and it just hangs there. Don't have this problem with other shows or previous episodes of Yowamushi pedel.

I've been experiencing the same problem on my TCL Tokyo tv for about 5 months. It may just be at high traffic times because some days it seems to work ok, but Saturday nights when I go to watch One Piece I always have problems. The app will take forever to load and the show show also takes a very long time to load when it does actually load which is only about half the time, I'm really getting sick of it. Why should I pay for something that's such a hassle to watch?

I'm not really having too many issues loading the actual videos once the app loads up but it takes literally a couple of minutes just for the app to fire up. In less time than it takes to fire it up on my roku TV I can change inputs to my PS$ and have it loaded and the episode playing before the roku would have even loaded the app, it's frankly ridiculous and unacceptable
