However, CR has stated they plan to bring offline viewing to apps later this year, so that may be their solution: source.

We are aware of the issue and our Android team is working on it. The quality selector is currently non-functional after we switched to a different host for our video a while ago. At the moment you're getting the full blown 1080p version, if your network is fast enough to load that. That's why the data consumption is rather high per episode.

No but seriously, it takes months to fix this? In the last two weeks I've racked up 5 gigs watching one episode a day in my work week on lunch, which is obnoxious and unreasonable. All these issues are understandable, the time it takes to do something about it is not. Terrible. Just terrible.

It happened to me last night, WHILE I was on my own home network. Watched a half an hour of DBS and suddenly I go from having freshly reset data to almost 2gbs used up!

That's really rare, indeed.
I did some tests though my network in Windows 10 app and Flash, and the browser eats more data than the app.

I'm getting an average of 150mb per 720p chapter (24 min). However, I found it's a really variable size; and since some Crunchyroll Apps doesn't let you to set a fixed adjustment, the data use will rise, if your phone screen is bigger in resolution.

Be aware of keeping some adjustments in your device, like restricting background data; even on roaming; or use an unlimited-data plan.

i don't know how the video size issue isn't fixed yet! it's been many months now!
this makes it the app unusable unless you're on wifi which means paying for a subscription is pretty useless

It's amazing to me they still haven't fixed this issue. I guess it's a good thing I still have a copy of an older version of the app that actually seems to honor the low bandwidth option.

Please fix it soon, it's eating my data plan. Does anybody found a workaround for android? Does watching the episode in the webpage at 480p consumes less data?

This is ridiculous. It makes it absolutely unusable while not at home. No way I'm gonna blast a gig of data per episode.

I'm having the same issue the data usage is way to high I have a limited data plan at home and mobile if the issue isn't fixed I'm cancelling my subscription.

Apparently i burned roughly 6gb's on 9 episodes on 1080p in just 1 day that to me is absurd (deathmarch if wondering what the anime was for any reason)
