Fixed it for me, set your video quality to anything but auto. My guess is the way ISPs claim they don't bottle neck speeds has fooled the CR developers into making something too sensitive to their obvious throttling

This has been such a long standing issue for me now that I'm pretty convinced that the staff at crunchyroll don't know what they're doing.
I've tried several different versions of the app, different devices and different connections, but they're all having the same issue. I am constantly getting a "retry" loop, regardless of what series or episode I'm watching, and it's making the app completely useless to me.

I paid a premium to use this service, but so far have been shown no interest from the staff to resolve this issue. I really regret buying an annual subscription, which I'll be canceling, and would much rather find something alternative at this point.

In short:

- if you're running any kind of anti-virus, first try uninstalling it completely. If uninstalling it completely is not an option try disabling it.
- Optional phone restart
- Attempt to watch shows on the app to see if this fixed the repeating audio problem.
- If you are still having buffering problems try lowering the video quality in the app's settings.
- Try different anti-virus programs to find one that works alongside the app (I had this issue with Bitdefender and Avast and finally settled on ESET).

Yeah I saw that thread, but I don't even have an anti virus app, so it can't be that.
I've done several reboots and reinstalls, but that didn't fix anything.
Lowering the video quality didn't help either. Even if it did I wouldn't accept that as a fix, because I didn't pay for premium so that I could be held back like this.

The thing is, I tried watching an episode on my S7 Edge earlier today and it seemed to work fine, but my Tab S gets the retry loop every time at the exact same spots in an episode. Both devices are set up quite identically, and none of them have issues with YouTube/twitch/Netflix.

I suspect it be related to ads being loaded incorrectly or something (even though I shouldn't be getting any ads to begin with).

Have you contacted Crunchyroll regarding this problem, they may be able to help you out and if there's nothing they can tell you to do, they'll most likely mention it to the developers. It's worth a shot. Here's the link: /contact

I have Roku streaming service and I have the same problem there. Crunchyroll's support is good but they never solved this issue. I hope they fix this or customer's won't stand for this for very long.

This is the result of a 2 things combined, a slow or inconsistent internet connection, and the apps small video buffer size.

Videos only buffer so far ahead and when the buffer size is small like the crunchy rolls app is, and your internet is spotty then it can't buffer in time. When you have a large buffer. (Netflix has around a 5 minute buffer) then your video is always loading and since it loads a lot more of the video before stopping then it preforms better.

I learned about then when I used to live in NYC and the subway stations along the 1 line got WiFi, I was able to start watching Netflix on the train, and was just buffering a little bit every stop, but because it buffered around 5 minutes at a time I was able to watch videos without it stopping to buffer, and I wanted to know how it worked.

The T-Mobile Binge On Disable fix could be a result of the increased speeds from not having all your media traffic metered, which would actually cause it to be slightly throttled.

I've had the same issue myself for a while and I have a Galaxy s7 efge and a Galaxy s8 and the issue persists with both phones on T-Mobile network. I know for a fact it's not T-Mobile's Network because Hulu Netflix YouTube and any other source of media I use do not have this issue only with Crunchyroll and VRV. I used to be a premium member but I felt like paying the money for endless looping, freezing and buffering wasn't worth the money so canceled it. I hate having to fight thru seemingly endless ads compounded by the looping/freezing issue but I'm a huge anime fan so I hammer thru. But it is a very poor viewing experience is getting harder and harder to bare and
Crunchyroll really really needs to address this issue and VRV isn't much better. I utilize both apps and have the same issue on both very disappointing for us Avid anime Watchers

I literally just bought a new phone and immediately became victim of this bug. I usually watch anime in bed on my phone to wind down for the day, but now I can't do that anymore. I'm honestly thinking of cancelling my subscription at this point because this thread makes it clear Crunchyroll isn't going to fix the problem.

By the way, this issue has nothing to do with buffer sizes or your network. This is happening on a connection that gets 300mbps over 5ghz wifi. It's clearly a problem with the app and likely specific phones / versions of Android.

So far I've consistently seen the Google Pixel and a few Samsung devices mentioned.

Edit:

Experiencing this on VRV at the exact same times as I do on the Crunchyroll app. I think this could even be a content related issue. I know a recent episode of My Hero Academia had an encoding issue that crashed the Crunchyroll app for some users. I've also noticed this occurs most frequently for me on recent releases (eg/ within their first week on Crunchyroll). I'm on a Google Pixel running Android 8.0.0.

I know neither of these are new revelations since both have been mentioned in this thread, but I'm hoping it helps some one triage the issue.
